出エジプト記 3章1～5節

1) モーセは、ミディアンの祭司、しゅうとイテロの羊を飼っていた。彼はその群れを荒野の奥まで導いて、神の山ホレブにやって来た。2) すると主の使いが、柴の茂みのただ中の、燃える炎の中で彼に現れた。彼が見ると、なんと、燃えているのに柴は燃え尽きていなかった。3) モーセは思った。「近寄って、この大いなる光景を見よう。なぜ柴が燃え尽きないのだろう。」4) 主は、彼が横切って見に来るのをご覧になった。神は柴の茂みの中から彼に「モーセ、モーセ」と呼びかけられた。彼は「はい、ここにおります」と答えた。5) 神は仰せられた。「ここに近づいてはならない。あなたの履き物を脱げ。あなたの立っている場所は聖なる地である。」

自分は一体、何者なのか。自分は一体、何をすべきなのか。モーセの120年の生涯は、まさに神から与えられた真のアイデンティティを回復する旅路でした。モーセは、へブル人（イスラエルの民）がエジプトの奴隷として捕囚されていた時代にへブル人として生まれました。ある時、エジプトの王ファラオは、へブル人に男の子が生まれたらその子供を殺すように命令を下します。しかし、モーセはナイル川のほとりでエジプトの王の娘に拾われ、王女の息子として育てられるのです。

こうしてモーセは、その生涯の最初の40年間、エジプトの王子としてのアイデンティティを持ち、自分を「人よりも価値ある者」だと認識していました。ある日、モーセは正義感のあまり、同胞のへブル人がエジプト人に虐げられているのを目にした時、そのエジプト人を打ち殺してしまいます。モーセは一転して殺人犯となり、逆にファラオから命を狙われるようになります。そこで、モーセはミディアンの荒野に逃れ、そこで次の40年間を羊飼いとして身を潜めるのです。荒涼とした砂漠の中で、あまりに長い年月、素性を隠して生きてきたモーセは、自分のアイデンティティをすっかり失い、自分のことを「無きに等しい者」として認識するようになります。

今日の御言葉は、そのような時に、自信喪失して生きているモーセに語られた神の言葉です。神はイスラエルの民をエジプトの捕囚から解放させるリーダーとしてモーセを選び、「燃える柴」の中から召されたのです。こうして、生涯最後の40年間をかけて、モーセは神から与えられたアイデンティティと役割を回復していきます。モーセは神と共に歩む中で、次第に自分を「無きに等しい者が神に用いられる」ことを認識していきます。

時に、私たちは自分のことを過大評価、あるいは過小評価して、自信過剰になったり、逆に自信喪失しながら生きています。しかし、それは神から与えられたものではない、偽りのアイデンティティです。私たちがキリストの十字架を通して与えられた新しい真のアイデンティティは、徹頭徹尾、「神に愛される神の子ども」です。もはや、頑張って自分の価値を証明しようとしたり、あるいは、不必要に自己憐憫に陥る必要はないのです。さらに、「神の子ども」には誰しも、それぞれユニークで特別な神の目的と役割が与えられています。私たちはその目的に従い、神と共に歩む時、神はその人を用い、豊かに祝福して下さるのです。それは、モーセが120年の生涯の旅路を通じて経験したことでした。

１．あなたのセルフイメージはどのようなものですか？一方、神の目にはあなたはどのように映っていますか？

２．新しい命と新しい一日を与えられた今日、あなたに与えられた神の目的、役割は何だと思いますか？

祈り

神様。今朝、私は目覚め、あなたから新しい命と新しい一日をいただきました。これはあなたのご計画であり、これをあなたにおささげします。この地上に生かされる間、私が「あなたの愛する子ども」であることを知り続ける生涯を送れますように。ことさら今日一日、あなたが私に与えて下さった目的を求め、それに従うことができますように。助けてください。主の御名によって。アーメン。

Silence and Stillness before God (2 minutes)

Exodus 3:1-5

1) Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

2) There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3) So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.” 4) When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” 5) “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”

Devotional

Who am I? What should I do? Moses’ 120-year life was truly a journey to recover his true identity given by God. Moses was born a Levite during the time when the Hebrews (Israelites) were held captive as slaves in Egypt. One day, Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, ordered the Hebrews to kill any male child born to them. However, Moses was picked up by Pharaoh’s daughter at the Nile River and raised as the son of the princess. 

Thus, for the first 40 years of his life, Moses identifies himself as a prince of Egypt and perceives himself as “something.” One day, when Moses sees his fellow Hebrew being beaten by an Egyptian, and he strikes him dead. Now Moses becomes a murderer, and Pharaoh tries to kill him. Moses flees to the wilderness of Midian, where he spends the next 40 years hiding as a shepherd. After living in the desolate desert for so many years, hiding his identity, Moses seems to lose all sense of identity, recognizing himself as “nothing.” 

It is when today’s Word of God was spoken to Moses. But, God chose Moses as the leader to deliver the Israelites from Egyptian captivity so He called Moses out of the “burning bush.” Over the next 40 years of his life, Moses restores his God-given identity and role. In his journey walking with God, Moses gradually recognizes that he is “nothing but is used by God.”  

Like Moses, sometimes we overestimate or underestimate ourselves. We live with overconfidence or, conversely, underconfidence. However, this is a false identity, not given by God. The renewed and true identity we have been granted through Jesus’ cross is, since we believed in Christ, it is always “God’s beloved child. No longer do we need to work hard to prove our values, or fall into unnecessary self-pity. Furthermore, every “child of God” has been given a unique and special purposes of God. When we follow that purpose and walk with God, He will use and bless us abundantly. Moses learned this throughout his 120-year life journey.

1. What is your self-image? Compare it with the image how God sees you.

2. Given a new life and a new day, what do you think is God’s purpose for you today?

Prayer

Dear God. You gave me a new life and a new day, so I woke up this morning. This is all yours  and I offer this day to you. Lead me lifetime to know that I am your beloved child. Help me seek and follow your purposes you have given me today. In the name of the Lord. Amen.
