14) こういうわけで、私は膝をかがめて、15) 天と地にあるすべての家族の、「家族」という呼び名の元である御父に祈ります。
16) どうか御父が、その栄光の豊かさにしたがって、内なる人に働く御霊により、力をもってあなたがたを強めてくださいますように。
17) 信仰によって、あなたがたの心のうちにキリストを住まわせてくださいますように。そして、愛に根ざし、愛に基礎を置いているあなたがたが、18) すべての聖徒たちとともに、その広さ、長さ、高さ、深さがどれほどであるかを理解できる力を持つようになり、19) 人知をはるかに超えたキリストの愛を知ることができますように。そのようにして、神の満ちあふれる豊かさにまで、あなたがたが満たされますように。

Silence and Stillness before God (2 minutes)
Ephesians 3:14-19
14) For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15) from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.
16) I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,
17) so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18) may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19) and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Devotional
Bernardus of Clairvaux, a famous theologian and preacher from the 12th Century in France, was the most influential Christian leader and writer of his day. In his great work, “Loving God,” Bernardus classifies love into four levels:
- Loving ourselves for our own sake
- Loving God for His gifts and blessings
- Loving God for himself alone
- Loving ourselves for the sake of God
For Bernardus, the greatest love for ourselves was that we love ourselves as God loves us. It is to love ourselves in the same degree, in the same manner, and with the same kind of love that God loves us.
We are created in the image of God, but our image was impaired by our sins. However, through the cross, we were reconciled to God and restored to his image as His child, the way we were meant to be. He made the covenant for us to help us love God, love ourselves and love our neighbors as God loves us.
Reflection
With what kind of love do you love God?
Prayer
Lord, strengthen me with your power. Help me to understand, even if a little, how wide and long and high and deep is your love that surpasses human knowledge. Help me not to love you because of the gifts or blessings you give me, but to love you because of you alone. Help me experience your love for this day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
