ルカの福音書 8章22～25節

22) ある日のことであった。イエスは弟子たちと一緒に舟に乗り、「湖の向こう岸へ渡ろう」と言われたので、弟子たちは舟を出した。

23) 舟で渡っている間に、イエスは眠り始められた。ところが突風が湖に吹きおろして来たので、彼らは水をかぶって危険になった。

24) そこで弟子たちは近寄ってイエスを起こし、「先生、先生、私たちは死んでしまいます」と言った。イエスは起き上がり、風と荒波を叱りつけられた。すると静まり、凪になった。

25) イエスは彼らに対して、「あなたがたの信仰はどこにあるのですか」と言われた。弟子たちは驚き恐れて互いに言った。「お命じになると、風や水までが従うとは、いったいこの方はどういう方なのだろうか。」

ディボーショナル

この箇所は、少し前に礼拝でも分かち合われましたが、また改めて黙想したいと思います。聖書の御言葉は生きていて、力があります。何回読んでも、その都度、新しい発見や気づきを与えてくれます。

ガリラヤ湖で大嵐にあった時、弟子たちはただただ恐れ惑いました。すると、居眠りをされていたイエスは起き上がって嵐を叱りつけ、沈められます。そして、弟子たちに「あなたの信仰はどこにあるのか」と聞かれたのです。この問いは、弟子たちの信仰のなさを指摘して辱めるのではなく、弟子たちがイエスをどう捉えているのかを考えさせるための霊的な問いでした。つまり、イエスがこれを問われたのは、弟子たちの信仰のなさを否定し、罪悪感を抱かせるよりも、弟子たちが結局は、どのような「視点」を持っているのかを考えさせるためだったのです。

「あなたの信仰はどこにあるのか。」

これは、私たちが人生の嵐に直面する時、真剣に考えなければいけない問いです。平和な日々で、突如、予期せぬ大きな嵐に出会うことがあります。その時、私たちは弟子たちと同じように、ただただ恐れ惑います。そして、嵐だけを見つめて、自分の手で何とかしようと試みたり、あるいは、嵐が過ぎ去るのを待つばかりです。すぐにキリストを見つめ、キリストの下には行かないのです。イエスの下に行くのは、よくても自分で手を尽くした後です。つまり、私たちはいともたやすく目先の嵐に目を奪われ、キリストがすべてを治められ、すべての問題を瞬時に解決する力のあるお方だということを見失うのです。

イエスの兄弟であったと言われるヤコブは、その手紙の中で、試練にあった時に知恵に欠けている人がいるなら、その人には、神様はだれであっても惜しみなく、とがめることなく、「知恵」を与えてくださると書いています。私たちが嵐や試練の中でキリストを見失う時、素直にキリストを求めるならば、神は私たちに知恵と信仰を与えてくださいます。私たちは、畏れを持ちながらも、その恵みを大胆に期待してよいのです。

問いかけ

思い悩む時、思うようにいかない時、嵐の中でキリストを見失っていることはありますか？それに気づく時、あなたはどうしますか？

祈り

神様。大小問わず、私たちが人生の嵐に会う時、嵐ばかりを見つめ、全知全能のあなたの下へ行くことを、いとも簡単に見失いました。憐れんでください。しかし、あなたはとがめもせずに私を受け入れ、愛し、知恵を与えて下さいます。どうぞ嵐の中であなたを知る知恵を与えて下さい。嵐の中であなたを見つめる目を与えて下さい。主の御名によって祈ります。アーメン。

Silence and Stillness before God (2 minutes) 

Luke 8:22-25 

22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.  

Devotional

This passage was shared in Sunday worship a while ago, but I’d like to reflect on it again. The Word of God is always living and powerful. No matter how many times I read it, the Spirit gives us new discoveries and insights each time.

When there was a great storm on the Sea of Galilee, the disciples were caught us with fear and perplexed. Then Jesus, who had been falling asleep, gets up, rebukes the storm, and all was calm. He then asked the disciples, “Where is your faith? This question wasn’t asked to humiliate the disciples by pointing out their lack of faith, but it was a spiritual question to make them think deeply about how they perceived Jesus. In other words, Jesus didn’t ask this question to deny the disciples or have them fall into the feeling of guilt, but rather to make them reflect on their views on the Lord and reorient their faith.

“Where is my faith?” This is a question we also want to seriously consider as we face the storms of life. Storms come to our life abruptly amid our peaceful days. Like disciples, we usually get caught up in fear and bewildered. It seems that all we can do is stare at the storm and do our best to protect our life from it. If it is too much to handle by ourselves, we simply give up and wait until the storm pass by. We try to come up with solutions or go to friends or family to ask for their advices, but we don’t always instantly look to Christ and go to Him. Sometimes, we go to the Lord as a last resort. In other words, we are so easily blinded by the storm at hand that we lose sight of the fact that Christ is the One who rules over everything, and He is powerful enough to solve all problems in just a moment.

James, who is a brother of Jesus, wrote in his letter that if anyone lacks wisdom in times of trial, God will give him or her “His wisdom” without reservation or reproach, If we genuinely seek Christ when we lose sight of Him in storms and trials, God will give us wisdom and faith. In awe, we can boldly expect such grace because He is a God of mercy.

Reflection 

Have you ever lost sight of Christ in the storm of life when you faced struggles or when things weren’t going well? When you realize that, what would you like to do?

Prayer

Father, when we face the storms of life, big or small, it is so easy to look only at the storms and lose sight of you, and to not going to you instantly. Almighty God, have mercy on me. But, I know that you still love me. You still accept me and give me your wisdom without reproach. Help me know you more in the storm. Give me eyes to see you in the storm. I pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
