ヨハネの福音書 21章16～19節
16) イエスは再び彼に「ヨハネの子シモン。あなたはわたしを愛していますか」と言われた。ペテロは答えた。「はい、主よ。私があなたを愛していることは、あなたがご存じです。」イエスは彼に言われた。「わたしの羊を牧しなさい。」
17) イエスは三度目もペテロに、「ヨハネの子シモン。あなたはわたしを愛していますか」と言われた。ペテロは、イエスが三度目も「あなたはわたしを愛していますか」と言われたので、心を痛めてイエスに言った。「主よ、あなたはすべてをご存じです。あなたは、私があなたを愛していることを知っておられます。」
イエスは彼に言われた。「わたしの羊を飼いなさい。18) まことに、まことに、あなたに言います。あなたは若いときには、自分で帯をして、自分の望むところを歩きました。しかし年をとると、あなたは両手を伸ばし、ほかの人があなたに帯をして、望まないところに連れて行きます。」
19) イエスは、ペテロがどのような死に方で神の栄光を現すかを示すために、こう言われたのである。こう話してから、ペテロに言われた。「わたしに従いなさい。」

十字架の死から復活したイエスは、再び弟子たちの前に現れます。その時、ペテロはガリラヤ湖で漁をしていました。しかし、ベテランの漁師であったペテロでさえ、その日は一晩かけても一匹も魚が釣れません。しかし、イエスは船の右側に網を打つように言われると、網が破れんばかりのたくさんの魚が捕れるのです。
そこで、初めてペテロはそれが主イエスだと気づきます。イエスは捕れた魚とパンを弟子たちに与えられ、一緒に食事をとられます。今日の御言葉はその時に、イエスがペテロに語られたものです。
ペテロとイエスの関わりを思い出してみてください。ペテロのイエスとの初めて出会いは、同じガリラヤ湖のほとりでした。イエスはそこでペテロと兄弟アンデレに「人をとる漁師にする」ため、網を捨てて、ご自分に従うように召されました。しかし、その後、イエスが逮捕されたとき、ペテロはイエスのことを三度、知らないと言ってイエスを裏切ります。その時、ペテロはイエスのまなざしを感じて、自分の弱さを悔やんで号泣するのです。
その後、復活したイエスは、初めて従うように召されたガリラヤで、再びペテロを召されます。そして、イエスは、三度裏切ったことのあるペテロに、三度「私を愛するか」と問われます。
今日の箇所は、イエスに従うことについて、私たちが考えることとは全く異なることを教えています。イエスに従うことは、意気揚々と自分のしたいことをするのではなく、自分の望まないところへ行き、自分の望まないことを喜んで受け入れることだと言われました。イエスはペテロにこう話してから、最後に「わたしに従いなさい」と言われたのです。
今日の最後で証言されているように、神様はあれほど弱かったペテロを新しく変えてくださいました。それは、ペテロがイエスの死と復活、そして、聖霊の満たしを経験したためです。どんなに弱い信仰者も、キリストの十字架によって全く新しく変えられるのです。
問いかけ
今、神様はあなたに、どのようにキリストに従うように言われていますか？あなたが従おうとするとき、どのような期待と不安がありますか？
祈り
神様。私は、自分の望まないところへは行きたくなく、自分の望まないことはしたくはないと思っていることを認めます。ペテロのように、自分が望むようにあなたに従いたいと思っています。憐れんでください。愛してください。どうか今日一日、あなたから目を離さず、あなたに従うことができますように。助けてください。イエスの御名によって。アーメン。

Silence and Stillness before God (2 minutes)
John 21:15-19
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you. ”Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”
Devotional
Raised from the dead, Jesus appeared to his disciples for the second time. Peter was fishing on Lake Galilee. Though he was an experienced fisherman, Peter couldn’t catch a single fish even after a whole night of fishing. But when Jesus told him to cast a net on the right side of the boat, he caught so many fish that the net was almost torn. It was when the disciples realized that it was the Lord Jesus. Jesus took the bread and the fish and gave it to them. Today’s Word was told to Peter in this context.
Do you remember how the relationship between Peter and Jesus began? Peter’s first encounter with Jesus occurred at the same Sea of Galilee. It was there that Jesus called Peter and his brother Andrew to leave their nets and follow Him to “make them fishers of men.” Later, however, when Jesus was arrested, Peter betrayed Jesus three times, saying “I don’t know the man!” Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken that he will disown him three times before the rooster crows so he went outside and wept bitterly.
After resurrection, Jesus calls Peter at the lake of Galilee once again, where he had first called him to follow. Jesus asks Peter three times, who has already denied Jesus three times, “Do you love me?
Today’s passage teaches us something very different from what we think about following Jesus. Jesus tells us that following him is not about doing what we want to do with gusto, but about going where we don’t want to go and being willing to accept what we don’t want to accept. Jesus told this to Peter and then he finally said, “Follow me.”
As testified at the end of today’s message, God transformed Peter’s life totally new. This was because Peter witnessed Jesus’ death and resurrection of Jesus, and then he was filled with the Holy Spirit. It is Jesus’ promise that even the weakest believer like Peter can be transformed into a completely new life to follow Jesus, that is the power of the gospel.
Reflection
How is God telling you to follow Christ today? What expectations or concerns do you have as you seek to follow him?
Prayer
Lord, I admit that deep down inside, I don’t want to go where I don’t desire and I don’t want to do what I don’t desire. But, like Peter, I want to follow you nevertheless. Have mercy on me. Transform me. Help me to keep my eyes on you and follow you throughout this day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
