マタイの福音書 25章34～40節
34) それから王は右にいる者たちに言います。『さあ、わたしの父に祝福された人たち。世界の基が据えられたときから、あなたがたのために備えられていた御国を受け継ぎなさい。35) あなたがたはわたしが空腹であったときに食べ物を与え、渇いていたときに飲ませ、旅人であったときに宿を貸し、36) わたしが裸のときに服を着せ、病気をしたときに見舞い、牢にいたときに訪ねてくれたからです。』
37) すると、その正しい人たちは答えます。『主よ。いつ私たちはあなたが空腹なのを見て食べさせ、渇いているのを見て飲ませて差し上げたでしょうか。38) いつ、旅人であるのを見て宿を貸し、裸なのを見て着せて差し上げたでしょうか。39) いつ私たちは、あなたが病気をしたり牢におられたりするのを見て、お訪ねしたでしょうか。』
40) すると、王は彼らに答えます。『まことに、あなたがたに言います。あなたがたが、これらのわたしの兄弟たち、それも最も小さい者たちの一人にしたことは、わたしにしたのです。』

父なる神の愛を経験する時、私たちの生き方は実際に変えられていきます。
神の愛を経験する時、私たちの内では心の癒しが始まったり、気持ちが元気になります。苦しい状況でも、希望を持って前を向いて歩めるようになったり、揺るがない平安を抱くようにもなります。
しかし、ただ安心感や温かい感情に浸るだけにはとどまりません。神の愛を経験した人は、他者を愛する生き方に変えられるのです。神様の愛の凄いところは、人を内面的に回復させるだけでなく、外面的な生き方を変える力があることです。それは、経験した人にしか分からない力でしょう。
神様の愛を経験したマザー・テレサは、生き方が大きく変えられました。カトリックとプロテスタントでは、教会や聖書に対する考え方が異なることを気にする方もいるかしれません。しかし、神様の愛を深く経験したことには変わりはありません。
テレサの生き方で、まず変えらえたのは「目」と「心」です。困っている人が目に映るようになり、どうしても神の愛を実践したいという心に変えられたのです。マザーテレサは、インドのカルカッタの道ばたで死にゆく人々の孤独と苦しみに目が留まります。そして、1952年に「死を待つ人々の家」を設立し、貧困や病気によって死期を迎えた多くの人たちを看病し、看取りました。
テレサは次のような言葉を残しています。「私は、たくさんの苦しむ人を前にしても、負担には感じません。多くの人がいても、私が見るのはその人、一人だけです。私は一度に一人しか愛することができません。一度に一人だけしか養うことができません。目の前にいる一人、また一人、もう一人。一人ひとりに近づくとき、私はキリストに近づくような気がします。イエスは言われました。『私の兄弟姉妹の最も小さい者の一人にしたことは、私にしたのです。』だから、また一人、また一人と愛していくことができます。どんなに頑張っても、私たちの働きは大海の一滴に過ぎません。しかし、その一滴がなければ、いずれ海は枯れてしまうのです。あなたにとっても同じことです。あなたの家族でも同じです。あなたが行っている教会でも同じです。ただ始めればいいのです……一人、一人、一人と！。人生の終わりを迎えるとき、私たちは、どれほど多くの学位を持っているか、どれほどたくさんのお金を稼いだか、あるいは、どれほど多くの偉大な業績を残したかによって判断されることはありません。私たちは、『飢えている私に食べさせ、裸でいる私に服を着せ、家がない私を受け入れました』と言われることによって判断されるのです。」
今日の聖書の言葉は、キリストが再び地上に来られる終末のことについて書かれています（25章31節）。その時、天の国を引き継ぐ者は、空腹な人を見て食べさせ、渇いている人を見て飲ませ、旅人であるのを見て宿を貸し、裸なのを見て着せ、病気になったり牢にいる人を見て尋ねる人だと書かれます。「見て」という言葉が5回使われていますが、ここで天国を引き継ぐ人は、すべて困った人を一人ひとりを「見て」、その人の必要に応える行動を取っています。その人を一人ひとり「見て」いるので、その人の必要が分かるのです。そして、最も小さい者の一人にしたそのことが、キリストに対してしたことと同じだと書かれます。
これが福音が約束している、神の愛を経験した人の生き方です。その変化は、とてもゆっくりだったり、なかなか目に見えないこともあります。しかし、じわじわと確かに進んでいるのです。その生き方は、神様の愛を味わいながら、じっと座っているようなものではありません。困っている人が目に入ってくる生き方。そして、一人であっても、人生をかけて具体的な愛の行動に移さないではいられない生き方です。
問いかけ
今週、どうしたら周りの人のうちにキリストを見出すことができるでしょうか？
祈り
主よ、私はしばしば、周りの人の必要や求めに応じきれず、圧倒されることがあります。しかし、最終的に責任を持っておられるのはあなたであり、私ではありません。今日、一人、また一人と、言葉と行いを通してあなたの愛をもって仕えることができるようにしてください。あなたの愛を経験させてくださり、実践させてください。主の御名によって祈ります、アーメン。

Matthew 25:34-40
34) “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35) For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36) I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37) “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38) When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39) When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40) “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Devotional
When we personally experience God’s love, our life will be actually transformed. You would first recognize the healing of your heart and mind. You would dicover hope and peace even during the darkest days. But, the trasformation does not stop there. It is beyond our warm and peaceful feelings.
Those who experience God’s love are transformed into a life to love others. The amazing thing about the power of God’s love is that it does not only transform internally, but also extermanlly. It is a power that only those who have experienced it can understand.
Mother Teresa experienced God’s love and her life was greatly transformed. Some may be concerned that Catholics and Protestants have different views of the church and the Bible. However, it is true that she deeply experienced God’s love in her life.
The first thing that was transformed in her life was her “eyes” and “heart.” Her eyes began to see people in need, and her heart was transformed to desperately desire to serve them and practice God’s love. Seeing the dying on the streets of Calcutta, India, she founded the Home for the Dying in 1952, where she cared for countless people who were suffering pain and loneliness.
She wrote, “I never look at the masses as my responsibility. I look only at the individual. I can love only one person at a time. I can feed only one person at a time. Just one, one, one. You get closer to Christ by coming closer to each other. As Jesus said, “Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do it to me.” So you begin . . . I begin. I picked up one person. . . . The whole work is only a drop in the ocean. But if we don’t put the drop in, the ocean would be one drop less. Same thing for you. Same thing in your family. Same thing in the church where you go. Just begin . . . one, one, one! At the end of our lives, we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made or how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry and you gave me to eat. I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you took me in.”
Today’s Scriptures speak of the end time, when Christ comes again to earth (25:31). It says that the righteous who will inherit the kingdom of heaven are those who see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink, those who see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you, and those who see you sick or in prison and go to visit you. Here, the word “see” is used three times, and all those who inherit heaven would “see” one person in need and act in response to his or her needs. Because they “see” each person individually, they know that person’s needs. And, what they did to one of the least of these brothers and sisters, they did for Christ.
This is what the Gospel promises in the life of a person who has experienced God’s love. The transformation may be slow or not easily visible. But it is surely progressing. The life of those who experienced God’s love is not like just sitting and enjoying God’s love only by yourself. It is a life where people in need come into your eyes. It is a life in which we cannot help but take concrete actions of love, even if it is just one person.
Reflection
How can you begin to see Jesus Christ in the people you meet this week?
Prayer
Lord, I am often overwhelmed by the needs of the world around me. Thank you that you are responsible for the world, and I am not. Help me to see the individual today — the “one, one, one” — so that the words and actions that flow from my life might reflect your life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
