ヨブ記 42章1～6節
1 ヨブは主に答えた。
2 あなたには、すべてのことができること、どのような計画も不可能ではないことを、私は知りました。3 あなたは言われます。 「知識もなしに摂理をおおい隠す者はだれか」と。確かに私は、自分の理解できないことを告げてしまいました。自分では知り得ない、あまりにも不思議なことを。
4 あなたは言われます。「さあ、聞け。わたしが語る。わたしがあなたに尋ねる。わたしに示せ」と。5 私はあなたのことを耳で聞いていました。6 しかし今、私の目があなたを見ました。それで、私は自分を蔑（さげす）み、悔いています。 ちりと灰の中で。

ヨブは、誠実で信仰深く、非難するところがない人でした。しかし、ある日突然、敵の襲撃や「天の火」によって全財産を失います。さらに、大風が吹いて家が倒壊し、７人の息子と３人の娘の命が奪われます。そして、自分自身も重い病気を患うのです。家族、財産、健康と、ヨブは文字通り持っていたものをすべて失い、人生の壁にぶつかります。信仰の葛藤を経験します。しかし、すべてを失ったその状況から、最後には、ヨブは神の愛と恵みを見出すのです。途方もない苦難の暗闇の中から、ヨブは新しく造り変えられました。
私たちはどんなに信仰深くても、どんなに努力しても、自分の境遇を自分の手でコントロールすることができません。私たちは、神をコントロールすることができないのです。そのような中で、突然、激しい苦難が訪れ、人生の壁にぶつかるとき、私たちは絶望感と無力感に陥ります。
クリスチャンであっても、私たちには理解できないことがあります。しかし、そのような状況を通して、神様が私たちに与えてくれるものがあります。それは、「すべてを手放して、神様だけに頼る」信仰です。ヨブは最大の苦難の中で、神について「聞く」という態度から、より積極的に、神を「見る（経験する）」という態度へ変えられました。私たちは、神様を「本当に」信頼する時、はじめて、神様を体験することができるのです。どのような苦難も、その恵みを妨げることはできません。
問いかけ
今、苦難を覚えていることはありますか。思い通りにいかないこと、解決の糸口が見えないこと、解放されないストレスや拭い去れない罪を抱えていることはありますか。
しかし、今日の御言葉を読むとき、あなたは神様とどのように向き合いますか？
祈り
父なる神様。ヨブの物語を読むとき、また、私たちが耐えがたい苦難に直面するとき、あなたのことを理解できず、ただ圧倒されます。あなたの時、あなたの方法は、私の理解をはるかに超えています。しかし、ヨブは苦難の中で「あなたを見ました」と告白しました。どうか私たちも苦難の中で、ヨブのように告白できるように助けてください。主イエスの御名によって祈ります。アーメン。

Silence and Stillness before God (2 minutes)
Job 42:1-6
1 Then Job replied to the Lord:
2 “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted. 3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to know.
4 “You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me.’ 5 My ears had heard of you
but now my eyes have seen you. 6 Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.”
Devotional
Job was a man of integrity, faith, and without reproach. One day, however, he lost all his possessions due to enemy attacks and “heavenly fire.” Furthermore, a great wind blew and his house collapsed, taking the lives of his seven sons and three daughters. And he himself suffered a serious illness. Job literally lost everything he had – his family, his possessions, his health – and hit a wall in his life. He struggled with faith. But in the end, in the midst of such a loss, Job found God’s love and grace. In the midst of the darkness of tremendous hardship, Job was transformed.
No matter how faithful we are, no matter how hard we try, we cannot control our circumstances. We cannot control God. In such a situation, when we are suddenly hit by severe hardships and hit the wall of life, we feel hopeless and helpless. Even as believers, there are many things that are uncertain and that we cannot understand. But there is certainly something that God gives us through such situations. It is the faith of surrendering everything to God and trusting Him alone. In the midst of his greatest hardship, Job was transformed from an attitude of “hearing” about God to a more active attitude of “seeing (experiencing)” God. We can only experience God when we “truly” trust Him. No suffering can hinder us from receiving that grace.
Reflection
Are you experiencing any hardship right now? Do you have anything that is not going well? Do you have any issues that don’t seem to have any solutions? Do you feel any stress that seems never possible to get rid of? Do you suffer from any lingering sins that seem to be never solved?
As you read today’s passage, how would you respond?
Prayer
Father. When I read the story of Job, and when we face unbearable hardships, I am just overwhelmed. I am unable to understand. Your time and your ways are far beyond my understanding. Yet, Job confessed in the midst of his affliction, “I have seen you.” Help me to confess like Job in the midst of our tribulation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
