マタイの福音書 26章26～46節
26) また、一同が食事をしているとき、イエスはパンを取り、神をほめたたえてこれを裂き、弟子たちに与えて言われた。「取って食べなさい。これはわたしのからだです。」27) また、杯を取り、感謝の祈りをささげた後、こう言って彼らにお与えになった。「みな、この杯から飲みなさい。28) これは多くの人のために、罪の赦しのために流される、わたしの契約の血です。29) わたしはあなたがたに言います。今から後、わたしの父の御国であなたがたと新しく飲むその日まで、わたしがぶどうの実からできた物を飲むことは決してありません。」
30) そして、彼らは賛美の歌を歌ってからオリーブ山へ出かけた。31) そのとき、イエスは弟子たちに言われた。「あなたがたはみな、今夜わたしにつまずきます。『わたしは羊飼いを打つ。すると、羊の群れは散らされる』と書いてあるからです。32) しかしわたしは、よみがえった後、あなたがたより先にガリラヤへ行きます。」
33) すると、ペテロがイエスに答えた。「たとえ皆があなたにつまずいても、私は決してつまずきません。」34) イエスは彼に言われた。「まことに、あなたに言います。あなたは今夜、鶏が鳴く前に三度わたしを知らないと言います。」35) ペテロは言った。「たとえ、あなたと一緒に死ななければならないとしても、あなたを知らないなどとは決して申しません。」弟子たちはみな同じように言った。
36) それから、イエスは弟子たちと一緒にゲツセマネという場所に来て、彼らに「わたしがあそこに行って祈っている間、ここに座っていなさい」と言われた。37) そして、ペテロとゼベダイの子二人を一緒に連れて行かれたが、イエスは悲しみもだえ始められた。38) そのとき、イエスは彼らに言われた。「わたしは悲しみのあまり死ぬほどです。ここにいて、わたしと一緒に目を覚ましていなさい。」39) それからイエスは少し進んで行って、ひれ伏して祈られた。「わが父よ、できることなら、この杯をわたしから過ぎ去らせてください。しかし、わたしが望むようにではなく、あなたが望まれるままに、なさってください。」40) それから、イエスは弟子たちのところに戻って来て、彼らが眠っているのを見、ペテロに言われた。「あなたがたはこのように、一時間でも、わたしとともに目を覚ましていられなかったのですか。41) 誘惑に陥らないように、目を覚まして祈っていなさい。霊は燃えていても肉は弱いのです。」
42) イエスは再び二度目に離れて行って、「わが父よ。わたしが飲まなければこの杯が過ぎ去らないのであれば、あなたのみこころがなりますように」と祈られた。43) イエスが再び戻ってご覧になると、弟子たちは眠っていた。まぶたが重くなっていたのである。44) イエスは、彼らを残して再び離れて行き、もう一度同じことばで三度目の祈りをされた。45) それから、イエスは弟子たちのところに来て言われた。「まだ眠って休んでいるのですか。見なさい。時が来ました。人の子は罪人たちの手に渡されます。46) 立ちなさい。さあ、行こう。見なさい。わたしを裏切る者が近くに来ています。」

昨日は、安息日の目的が神の働きを覚え、それを喜ぶことだと申命記5章から教えられました。このレント（受難節）の期間、私たちはイエスが示された愛の働きについて、改めて覚えたいと思います。その働きとは、十字架の死と復活です。今日の箇所はいつもより少し長いですが、ゆっくりと思い巡らせたいと思います。
これは、イエスがエルサレムに入城された後、十字架につけられるまでの最後の一週間の出来事です。今日の箇所はイエスが逮捕される前の晩のことです。その文脈を見ると、多くのことを教えられます。イエスのなさった働きを順を追って見ていきます。
・聖餐：キリストが割かれる体、流される血を覚えるために、イエスはパンと杯をとり、弟子たちに分かち合われました。
・ゲッセマネの祈り：弟子たちのうち、ペテロ、ヨハネ、ヤコブを連れて、悲しみの祈りに伴うように導きます。イエスは、十字架の死という杯が取り除かれるよう神に願いますが、神のみこころのためには杯を受け入れる決心をします。イエスは、悲しみもだえながら、同じ言葉を使って3回、これを繰り返して祈るのです。
「杯」というキーワードが、この二つの出来事をつなげていることが分かります。つまり、私たちが神と一つになり、神のからだ（教会）と一つとされるために（＝聖餐）、神であるイエスが代わりに死罰という神の裁きと呪いを受け入れる決心をされるのです。イエスは悲しみもだえながら、その決心を言葉にして3度、祈っています。肉体的な苦しみもさながら、死ぬほどの霊的な悲しみを覚えながら、神の御心に従っているのです。
一方、弟子たちを見ると対照的です。「死んでもついていく」と豪語した直後に、イエスを3度、裏切りました。イエスの悲しみの祈りに招かれても、2度も居眠りをしてしまいました。これらは、自分に正直になるなら、私たちの心にも見られることです。
この対比から教えられることは何でしょうか？それは、イエスの愛の働きは世界を変える力がありますが、私たちの働きは最後まで無力であることです。私たちは、どんなに意気込んでも、努力しても、神を愛し、隣人を愛することができません。それを可能にするのは、キリストの働きのみ、十字架の死と復活だけです。しかし、イエスは、そんな無力な私たちを見捨てることなく、むしろ愛するあまり、私たちのためにこの苦悶の杯を受け入れる決心をされたのです。
問いかけ
イエスのなさった愛の働きを覚えようとする時、それを妨げるものものは何でしょうか？
忙しさでしょうか？娯楽でしょうか？自分の働きでしょうか？
祈り
神様。あなたは私のために死ぬほどの悲しみを伴いながら決心され、十字架の道を歩まれました。しかし、それを忘れ、霊的に寝てしまうことがあります。自分の働きばかりに目が行き、あなたの働きを見失うことがあります。どうぞ憐れんでください。まずは、私の心の中であなたの愛の働きを豊かに経験させてください。あなたの犠牲の愛が分かるようにしてください。主の御名によって祈ります。アーメン。

Silence and Stillness before God (2 minutes)
Matthew 26:26-46
26) While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” 27) Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28) This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29) I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
30) When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 31) Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “ ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32) But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
33) Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”34) “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” 35) But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.
36) Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37) He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38) Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” 39) Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” 40) Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41) “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42) He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” 43) When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44) So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. 45) Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46) Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Devotional
Yesterday, we were taught from Deuteronomy 5 that the purpose of Sabbath is to remember God’s work and rejoice in it. During this Lent, we want to remember again the work and love that Jesus showed us. His work is to die on the cross and raise from the dead. Today’s passage is a little longer than usual, but I hope our heart is deeply touched by Jesus’ love.
This happened in the final week of Jesus’ ministry on the earth between Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and his crucifixion on the cross. Today’s passage is about the night before Jesus was arrested. The context teaches us many things, but we’d like to follow along the context and focus on Jesus’ work he has done for us.
– Last Supper: In order to remember His broken body and shed blood, Jesus took bread and cup, and shared them with His disciples.
– Prayer in Gethsemane: Jesus took His disciples, Peter, John, and James and prayed in sorrow and anguish. Jesus asks God to remove the cup of death on the cross, but decides to accept it for the sake of God’s Will. Jesus repeats this prayer three times, using the same words, as he struggles with his grief.
Here, we can see that the key word “cup” connects these two events. In other words, in order for us to become united with God and with the Body of God (the Church), Jesus makes the decision to accept God’s judgment and curse of death penalty on our behalf. Jesus prays in sorrow and in agony, putting his decision into words. Jesus obeys God’s Will, not only in physical suffering, but also in spiritual sorrow to the point of death.
The disciples, on the other hand, stood in contrast. Immediately after saying, “Even if I die, I will follow you,” Peter betrayed Jesus three times. Even when invited to Jesus’ prayer of sorrow, they fell asleep twice. If we become really honest, these are things we can see also in our own hearts.
So, what is God telling us from this contrast? It is Jesus’ work that has the power to change the world, but our work is always powerless. We cannot love God or love our neighbors, no matter how enthusiastic we are, or how hard we work. Only the work of Christ, His death on the cross and His resurrection can make this possible. Nevertheless, Jesus did not look down on us or abandon us, but rather, out of His passionate love, He decided to accept the cup of anguish for us.
Reflection
When we try to remember the work of love that Jesus showed us, what are things that prevent us from doing so? Busyness, entertainment, or our focus on our own work?
Prayer
Lord, You made up your mind in sorrow and agony to the point of death, and chose to walk the path to the cross. It was all because you loved me so much. Sometimes, I lose your love and fall asleep spiritually. Sometimes, I am so focused on my own work that I lose sight of Your work. Forgive me. Guide me to experience the work of Your love first in my heart. Help me to know more Your sacrificial love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
