ヨハネの福音書 15章4～5節
4) わたしにとどまりなさい。わたしもあなたがたの中にとどまります。枝がぶどうの木にとどまっていなければ、自分では実を結ぶことができないのと同じように、あなたがたもわたしにとどまっていなければ、実を結ぶことはできません。
5) わたしはぶどうの木、あなたがたは枝です。人がわたしにとどまり、わたしもその人にとどまっているなら、その人は多くの実を結びます。わたしを離れては、あなたがたは何もすることができないのです。
ディボーショナル
イエスのぶどうの木のたとえ話です。ここでは、父なる神は農夫、御子イエスはまことのぶどうの木、そして、私たちはぶどうの枝に例えられています。このたとえ話の中心的な教えは、私たちがイエスとの関係に「とどまりなさい」ということです。この「とどまる」ことについて深く考えたいと思います。
この文脈で使われる「とどまる」という言葉には、少なくとも三つの意味合いがあることに気づかされます。それは、「動かない」、「保つ」、そして「受け入れる」という意味合いです。まず、「動かない」とは、神の前で立ち止まることです。次に、「保つ」とは、神との関係を変えないこと、つまり、切れたりつながったりを繰り返すような断続的な関係ではないことです。最後に、「受け入れる」とは、実を結ばせるものは、枝である自分ではなく、ぶどうの木であるイエスであると受け入れることです。
ここで「とどまる」＝「動かない」について、もう少し考えてみたいと思います。私たちは、24時間365日、寝ている時間以外はいつも忙しく動いています。身体が動いていなくても、頭や心が動いています。しかし、私たちは、イエスとの関係を築くためには、必ず立ち止まる必要があります。神様との関係は、親子関係や夫婦関係と同じように、マルチタスクしながらでは決して深められない性質があります。運転しながら、スマホをいじりながら、あるいは、他ごとを考えながらでは、神との関係は深まりません。また、仕事や家庭や伝道など、それが神のためであっても、動き続けるだけで立ち止まることがなければ、決して深められません。必ず止まる必要があるのです。
止めるとは、手と頭と心のすべて止めることです。つまり、働きを中断し（手）、考え事を中断し（頭）、そして、色々な思いを脇に置くこと（心）です。神との関係は、動くことではなく、止まることから始まります。一方、どんなに頑張って働いても、奉仕をしていても、神との関係にとどまらないことがあり得ます。「忙」という漢字は言い得て妙で、忙しく過ごすうちに「心」を「亡ぼす」ことになるからです。
自宅の庭で巨峰を育てていた時を思い出します。実際、ぶどうの木を見ると、つるのように細く、地味で乾燥した枝でつながっています。しかし、時期が来ると、「この甘さはどこから生まれたのか」と驚くほどの巨峰の実が数えきれないほど実ります。ご近所におすそ分けしても余ってしまうほど多くの実が毎年、実ります。
デイリーディボーションの目的は、自分のすべてを止めて、神にとどまることです。これは動的で派手なものではなく、むしろ静的で地味なものです。毎日のディボーションは一見、弱々しく、意味がなく感じられるかもしれません。毎日、目からがうろこが落ちるような体験はないかもしれません。しかし、神にとどまることで確かな実りが約束されているのです。

イエスにとどまるために、止める必要があることは何ですか？

父なる神様。私はいつも休むことなく動いてきました。外は様々な働きで、内は様々な思いや考えで、絶え間なく動いています。そこから得られたものは、あなたの知恵と安らぎではなく、自己中心と疲れでした。どうぞ赦してください。あなたを信頼し、勇気をもって、すべてを止めてあなたとの時間を過ごせるように助けてください。主に御名によって祈ります。アーメン。

John 15:4-5
4) Remain in me, as I also remain in you.a No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

Devotional
Jesus shares a parable of the Vine and the Branches. Here, God the Father is the gardener, Jesus the Son is the true vine, and we are the branches. The central teaching of this parable is that we are to abide in Jesus in our relationship with Him. Today, we’d like to take a closer look at what abiding means to us.
The word “abide” as used in this context may have at least three aspects – which is to “stop,” “stay,” and “trust.” First, to “stop” is to stop working before God. Second, to “stay” is to keep our relationship with God constantly but not intermittently. Finally, to “trust” is to accept that it is not you, the branch, but Jesus, the vine, that produces the fruit.
I would like to think a little more about the aspect of “stopping.” Our life is always busy, working 24/7, except when we are sleeping. Even if our bodies are not working, our heads and hearts are. But we must always stop to cultivate a relationship with Jesus. Like in marriage or parenting, the nature of our relationship with God can never be deepened while multitasking. We cannot deepen our relationship with God if we are to only spare some time with God while driving, playing on your phone, or thinking about other things. We need to pay full attention to God. If we just keep working and never stop, we cannot build deeper relationship with God even if the work was or God, whether at workplace, home, or church. We always need to stop working in order to abide in Him.
To stop means to stop everything: hands, head, and heart. That is, to stop working (hands), to stop thinking (head), and to put aside all feelings (heart). One of the uniquenss of Christian faith is that our relationship with God begins not with working, but with stopping. On the other hand, no matter how hard we work or serve, it is possible to not abide in relationship with God. The Chinese character “忙,” which means busy, tells us about human nature. The structure of the character is a combination of the left part that means “heart,” and the right part that means “lose.”
I remember when I was growing grapes in my backyard. When you look at the grape vines, the branches are thin and dry. But when the time comes, it bears countless fruits that make you wonder, “where did all this sweetness and water come from? The tree bore so many friuts each year that even after sharing some with our neighbors, there was always a surplus.
The purpose of daily devotional is to stop everything and to abide in Jesus. This is not something that we always feel dynamic or dramatic, but rather static and sober. Sometimes, daily devotional may feel dry and powerless. However, what Jesus promised with us is that God will surely bear fruits in us when we keep abiding in Him.

Father, I know how often I am carried away by too many concerns and demands and projects. I have felt the violence to my soul. Deliver me from this whirlwind around me and in me. Heal my tired and weary spirit, allowing the wisdom that comes from rest in you to flow deep within me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
