ヨハネの福音書 3章26～30節
26) 彼らはヨハネのところに来て言った。「先生。ヨルダンの川向こうで先生と一緒にいて、先生が証しされたあの方が、なんと、バプテスマを授けておられます。そして、皆があの方のほうに行っています。」
27) ヨハネは答えた。「人は、天から与えられるのでなければ、何も受けることができません。28) 『私はキリストではありません。むしろ、その方の前に私は遣わされたのです』と私が言ったことは、あなたがた自身が証ししてくれます。29) 花嫁を迎えるのは花婿です。そばに立って花婿が語ることに耳を傾けている友人は、花婿の声を聞いて大いに喜びます。ですから、私もその喜びに満ちあふれています。30) あの方は盛んになり、私は衰えなければなりません。」

頑張って生きる人は誰しも、「これだけは負けたくない」というものを密かに持っているでしょう。学生であれば、自分の好きな教科やスポーツ。主婦であれば、自分の得意料理。ビジネスマンであれば、自分が専門としているプロジェクト。努力して成功を重ねてきたからこそ自信があり、人には負けたくないのです。
とはいえ、自分より圧倒的に優れている人だと分かれば、素直に負けを認め、比べることすらしません。どんなに野球に自信があっても、メジャーリーガーの大谷翔平選手に負けたくないとは思いません。むしろ喜んで教えを乞うでしょう。負けたくない思いが生まれるのは、自分より経験が浅く、知識が乏しく、年齢が若く、努力もしていないと思われる人が、自分より成功している時です。今日の聖書の箇所のヨハネの弟子たちがそうでした。
バプテストのヨハネは、多くの人に悔い改めを説き、洗礼を授けていました。ヨハネの名はその地域全体に知れ渡り、絶大な影響力がありました。しかし、ヨハネの弟子たちは、多くの人たちが「新人」のイエスから洗礼を受けているのを見て、「皆があの方の方に行っています」と不平を漏らします。何ともみっともないと思われるかもしれませんが、この負けず嫌いは時に、私たちにも見られることです。
時々、私たちは、神に対しても負けたくないと思っていることがあります。それは、神に頼らず、自分に頼って生きている時です。自分には限界があり、不完全であることを忘れ、自分の力で頑張りすぎている時。すべては神の働きであることを忘れている時。無意識であっても、そのような時に、私たちは神よりも優れていると思い込み、神に対しても負けず嫌いになっています。
しかし、ヨハネはわきまえていました。自分が何者なのか、また、イエスが何者なのかを知っていました。自分の働きと神の働きの違いを悟っていました。だからこそ「あの方は盛んになり、私は衰えなければなりません。」と告白しています。言い換えれば、「キリストが高められ、私は低められなければならない」ということです。
神と比べたら、私たちの知恵や能力はあまりに小さいものです。どんなに頑張っても、事実として、私たち人間には限界があります。このことを「本当に」悟る時、何か成功しては有頂天になったり、失敗しては自己嫌悪に陥ったりと、一喜一憂することがなくなります。また、学校であれ、家庭であれ、仕事であれ、伝道や弟子訓練であれ、働いているのは神であり、私たちではありません。そもそも無力である私たちが、愛と憐れみによって、無限の神の働きに加えられているのです。このことを「本当に」悟る時、どんな試練や苦しみに直面しても、心底、喜んで神と人に仕え続けることができます。
問いかけ
神を知り、自分を知るために、神様から賜物（ギフト）として与えられている自分の限界や足りなさは、具体的に何でしょうか。
祈り
神様。時々、私はあなたに対して負けたくないと思っていました。あなたの力や働きを自分のものだと思い込み、結果に応じて、自信過剰になったり、自己嫌悪に陥ることを繰り返してきました。どうぞ憐れんでください。今、あなたこそが私の主、キリストであることを悟らせてください。今、あなたこそが高められ、私を低くしてください。主イエスの御名によって祈ります。アーメン。

Silence and Stillness before God (2 minutes)
John 3:26-30
26) And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.”
27) John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. 28) You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ 29) The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30) He must increase, but I must decrease.”
Devotional
The more we try to work hard and live diligently, the more we have something that we really don’t want to lose. If you are a student, you don’t want to lose in your favorite subject or sports. If you like to cook, you don’t want to lose in your best dish you can cook. If you are a businessman, you don’t want to lose in a project that you specialize in. No one wants to lose in the areas that they are good at. Everyone builds confidence because they have worked hard and succeeded.
However, once we find out that someone is way better than us, we can easily admit defeat and we don’t even compare. No matter how good you think you are in football, you’d never think you are better than NLF players like Tom Brady who won Super Bowl seven times. We’d never even compare ourselves to the professionals, but perhaps we want to ask them to teach us how to play better. But, it is when someone seems to be less experienced, less knowledgeable, younger, and less hardworking than you is that you begin to hate losing. Such was the case with John’s disciples in today’s Bible passage.
John the Baptist was preaching repentance and baptizing many people. He was well known throughout the area and had tremendous influence. However, when John’s disciples saw that many people were being baptized by the “freshman” Jesus, they grumbled, saying “look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” We may think that this is too ludicrous, but if we become very honest, we also find this attitude sometimes in ourselves.
Sometimes, we don’t want to lose against God. We figure this when we live our lives just relying on own wisdom, experiences, or abilities, but not God’s. It is when we lose sight of the fact that we have limitations, that we are imperfect, and that we are trying too hard in our own strength. It is when we forget that in everything, God’s at work. Conscious or unconscious, it is at such times that we think we are better than God and we don’t want to lose against Him.
But, John was open to give way to God. He knew who he was and who Jesus was. He realized the difference between his own work and God’s work. That is why he could confess saying, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”
Compared to God, maybe our wisdom and ability are not good enough. No matter how hard we work, the fact is that we humans have limits. When we “truly” realize this, our heart begins to no longer overreact with success or failure, ups or does in our life. Whether at school, home, work, or church, it is God who is at work, not us. As a matter fact, we are powerless and ineffective in ourselves. But, by no means this is something we ought to become shameful or pessimistic about. Actually, it is when, by his love and mercy, God invites us and uses our imperfection for the sake of his perfection. This is just mind-blowing. And, when we “truly” realize this, we can keep loving and serving God and others, wholeheartedly and joyfully, no matter what trials and sufferings we face in our journey of faith.
Reflection
Name one or two limits God has recently placed in your life as a gift.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the arrogance that sees interruptions to my plans as alien invasions. Forgive me for constantly trying to do more than you intend with my life. Help me to be like John the Baptist, embracing my losses and respecting my limits. In Jesus’ name, amen.
