へブル人への手紙 12章7～11節
7) 訓練として耐え忍びなさい。神はあなたがたを子として扱っておられるのです。父が訓練しない子がいるでしょうか。
8) もしあなたがたが、すべての子が受けている訓練を受けていないとしたら、私生児であって、本当の子ではありません。
9) さらに、私たちには肉の父がいて、私たちを訓練しましたが、私たちはその父たちを尊敬していました。それなら、なおのこと、私たちは霊の父に服従して生きるべきではないでしょうか。
10) 肉の父はわずかの間、自分が良いと思うことにしたがって私たちを訓練しましたが、霊の父は私たちの益のために、私たちをご自分の聖さにあずからせようとして訓練されるのです。
11) すべての訓練は、そのときは喜ばしいものではなく、かえって苦しく思われるものですが、後になると、これによって鍛えられた人々に、義という平安の実を結ばせます。

近年で最も厳しい試練は、やはりコロナウィルスでしょう。なぜなら、私たち一人ひとりの「信仰の本質」がふるいにかけられたからです。コロナウィルスによって、感染リスクや人と会えない寂しさを経験しました。しかし、本質的には、私たちの信仰の核心部分、すなわち、神様と隣人を愛せるかが試されたのです。教会に集えないことによって、日々、個人的に神様と共に歩めるかが問われました。ワクチンやマスクについてによって、考え方の異なる他者、つまり、隣人に愛と犠牲をもって仕えることが問われました。
残念ながら、アメリカ全体を見ると、非常に多くのクリスチャンが神様から離れ、教会から離れていることが、様々な調査によって分かってきました。神様との個人的な交わりを持たなくなりました。様々な意見の違いの中で、最後まで「自分の正しさ」を主張し続けたり、あるいは、他者に無関心になることで、兄弟姉妹や隣人との関係に断絶が生じました。神を礼拝し、隣人に仕える時間より、ストレス解消のために娯楽を優先する生活になりました。また、自分の求める「サービス」を求めて様々な教会を渡り歩き、消費主義というこの世の価値観と調子を合わせて、教会を「サービス業」と捉えるようになりました。つまり、教会を「仕える（サーブする）コミュニティ」ではなく、「仕えてもらう（サーブしてもらう）コミュニティ」という認識がさらに拡がりました。
霊的に見ると、コロナウィルスによって信仰者と神様、教会、隣人との間に著しい分断が生じているようです。サタンの目的は、巧妙に「分断させること」ですが、まさに、すべてのクリスチャンがこの試練を経験しています。これについて、20世紀を代表するクリスチャン・リーダーの一人であるレイトン・フォード氏は、コロナによって信仰者の「刈り込み」がされていると表現しています。
しかし、コロナウィルスという厳しい試練を耐え忍んだ人は、コロナを通して信仰が強められます。これまでの生活を見直し、神様と交わる時間を持つようになります。これまでの優先順位を見直し、神様を第一するために、他のものを手放せるようになります。これまでの生き方を見直し、自分や家族だけではなく、隣人に愛と関心を注いで仕える生き方に変えられます。
なぜなら、父なる神が私たちをご自分の子どもとして、本気で愛しておられるからです。コロナウィルスは、他の病気や死と同じように、神様が与えたものではなく、罪によって堕落した世界の産物です。しかし、神様はコロナウィルスを通してでさえ、私たちを身元に近づけて下さるのです。今日の御言葉は、目先の困難に捕らわれず、神様の愛へ目を向けることを教えています。このように視点を変えることによって、私たちの生き方が大きく変えられるのです。
問いかけ
コロナウィルスの試練によって、神と隣人との関係において、神様に取り扱われるべきこと、悔い改めるべきことはありますか。
苦難を通して、神様はどのような新しい生き方に招いておられますか。
祈り
神様。どうぞ頑なで不信仰な私を赦してください。このような私でも新しい生き方に変えて下さると、あなたは十字架による死と復活によって約束して下さいました。あなたは今日、不健全なものや一時的なもの、私の偶像を心の内から一切、取り除くよう招いておられます。今、あなたの招きに身を委ね、あなたの自由を経験させてください。あなたとの交わりの中で、あなたの義という平安の実を結ばせてください。主イエスの御名によって祈ります。アーメン。

Hebrew 12:7-11
7) Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?
8) If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.
9) Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!
10) They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.
11) No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
Devotional
Indeed, COVID-19 was the most severe trial for all believers in recent years. It is because for all believers their faith was sifted. Of course, covid caused us to experience the risk of infection and the loneliness of not being able to see people. But, fundamentally, we were tested on “the core of our faith,” that is, whether we love God and our neighbors. By not being able to gather in church, we were tested to walk with God individually on a daily, personal basis. By vaccination and masking, we were tested to serve others who think differently, our neighbors, with love and sacrifice.
Unfortunately, various surveys have shown that in the U.S. as a whole, the largest percentage of Christians in American history seem to be walking away from God and away from the church. They no longer have personal fellowship with God on a daily basis. By insisting on your own righteousness in various issues such as vaccination, race, or politics, or by becoming indifferent to others, the relationships with brothers, sisters, and neighbors are cut off. We begin to prioritize entertainment to relieve stresses over time spent worshipping God and serving our neighbors. We begin to embrace more “church-hopping” in search of a place where our ideal “service” seems to be offered. We come to view the church as a “business,” aligned with the values of this world, which is consumerism. In other words, the perception of the church as a “community that serve us” has become more dominant than a “community that we love and serve others together.”
From a spiritual perspective, covid seems to have caused a significant division between believers and God, the church, and their neighbors. Satan’s goal is always to “divide” people from God and one another, indeed all Christians were affected by this temptation. Leighton Ford, one of the most influential Christian leaders in the 20th century, described this as the “pruning” of believers and the church by coronavirus.
However, those who endure the severe trial of covid are strengthened in their faith. They begin to reorient their lives and spend more time in fellowship with God. They reorient their priorities and be able to surrender things that are not ultimately important, so that they can put God first. They discover their old way of life and accept God’s invitation to be transformed and live a new life to love and serve God and our neighbors.
Today’s verse tells us that we will actually be able to grow in love for God and others because God the Father really loves us as His children. Like other diseases and death, covid is not given by God, but is part of our fallen world. But, God brings us closer to Him even through such a hardship like covid. Today’s Word reminds us of not to get caught up in immediate difficulties, but to turn our eyes to God’s love. By changing our perspective in this way, our way of life can be transformed.

Prayer
Lord, forgive my stubbornness and unbelief. You promised through your death and resurrection that you would change me into a new life. You are inviting me today to cut off all that is unhealthy and temporary, all my idols. Help me to surrender everything and accept your invitation. Guide me to experience your freedom. Let me bear the fruit of the peace of your righteousness in communion with you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
