Changes are Coming

By Pastor Craig Swanson

It’s funny how certain things stick with you.  I remember a homiletics professor talking about the importance of repetition and reinforcement of thoughts in preaching.  He said an old country preacher described using introductions and conclusions with his sermons by saying, “First I tell them what I’m going to tell them.  Then I tell them what I tell them.  And finally, I tell them what I told them.”  Repeating a message in different ways is a great method for reinforcing what is truly important.

At the risk of over-communicating, I’d like to repeat, in this article, something I shared before the message a few weeks ago.  Then, I was telling you what I was going to tell you.  Now, I’m telling you what I’m telling you.  There are some changes coming to the appearance of the sanctuary at FBC.  When the video projection system was installed, a single projector was mounted in the center of the sanctuary and a retractable screen was placed in front of the cross.  Whenever the projector is in use, the screen is lowered and the cross becomes hidden from view.

But since the cross is central to our faith, for years I’ve been trying to find some way that we can use video technology AND keep the cross visible and in focus.  In order to accomplish this, we will be installing two projectors and screens to the sides of the platform, reducing the need for the center screen to be lowered.  Things will look different.  They may not even look better.  But the cross will be front and center as we gather for worship.

In preparation for this, I’d like to share some reasons why the cross is so significant.  1 Corinthians 1:18 says that “the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” Ephesians 2:16 reminds us that God reconciled “both of them (Jew and Gentile) to God through the cross, by which He put to death their hostility.” Colossians 1:20 tells us about “making peace through His blood, shed on the cross.”  And in 1 Peter 2:24 we are told that “He Himself bore our sins” in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness;”

While we don’t know exactly when these changes will be taking place, knowing that they are coming and why they are coming will help us avoid being taken by surprise when they do come.  And please share the word in case my repetition and reinforcement somehow misses the mark.

Japanese Language Sunday School

By Mina Chen

Japanese Language Ministries have worship service in the Sanctuary at 9:30am and Japanese Language Sunday school in the serving room at 11:15am.  In the Sunday school class, we review the message that was presented during the service and share our thoughts and ask questions if we have any.  This is a great time not only to get a clearer understanding of the Word but also to learn what God has revealed to other people from the message.  We also preview the passage for the next Sunday.  This helps us meditate on the passage beforehand and prepare our hearts to listen to the message rather than just showing up on Sundays.  If any new person comes to our Sunday school class, we start with introducing ourselves so that they will feel comfortable sharing in our group. Ichiro-san has been sending out Sunday school newsletters and the thoughts that were shared.  This helps us to stay on track and deepen our knowledge even if we miss a Sunday.

Children’s Sunday School

By Mike and Carrie Ishimitsu

Ever wonder what the children actually do in the Sunday School hour? We all know that it gets them to dig deep into the Word and that it provides a great time for the kids to connect with each other, but how is all that done? It all starts with a fun and interactive opening activity that directs the kids’ attention to the upcoming lesson. The lesson then attempts to answer the question “What does the Bible say?” and the children have an opportunity to investigate the biblical truths as the teachers provide perspective and understanding through object lessons or visual aids. Finally, they explore relevant applications for these truths and provide opportunity for the kids to respond.  And throughout, the children practice scripture memorization, with a new verse each month.  This quarter, our Sunday School students will be studying the books of Colossians and Philemon in the New Testament and the book of Jonah in the Old Testament, focusing on the truth that Jesus is enough, discovering the benefits of having a relationship with Christ, and studying God’s relentless pursuit to save people.

This year, we have four new teachers joining our Sunday School staff: Trish Vlach, Laci and Andrés Brumbry, and Derek Sandbeck.  Trish currently works as an elementary school teacher for homeschooling families in the Edmonds school district and also serves as an advisor to those families. She will be serving alongside Paul Mayeda with the 4th and 5th grade class.  Laci and Andrés, who will be teaching the Pre-K/K class together, met in college in Costa Rica where Laci participated in a study abroad program.  She later returned to Costa Rica to teach English, and eventually they married and relocated to Seattle.  They have a 2-year-old daughter, Leah. Derek, who has served as our worship leader for several years, will join his wife Iris along with Mo Fain to teach the toddler class.  Alisa Williamson and Jeff and Sherry Lin will continue to lead the 1st-3rd grade class, and Patty Mayeda and Antoinette Williams will continue to take care of the little ones in the nursery.

WASABI (Middle School) Sunday School

By Pastor Mike Kurtz

Another year and a lot of new students! As in the last few years, I (Pastor Mike) will be teaching the class. It’s a great way for me to get to know the upcoming youth and for them to get to know me. I am looking forward to the year ahead as I teach truths that will help them currently as well as get them ready for the sometimes confusing and challenging years of high school ahead.

For the new school year ahead, we will begin with a short curriculum entitled “Finding Truth” with Francis Chan. From the description:

“Christians today face all kinds of challenges when it comes to understanding who they are and what they’re meant to do. There’s no shortage of options that claim to offer “truth.” If we’re not careful, we can find ourselves chasing after popular opinion, celebrity opinions, or the tug of our emotions all the while neglecting the unchanging truth found in Scripture. In this four-session series, pastor and author Francis Chan invites students into the power and confidence that comes from anchoring their identity, purpose, and relationships in the truth of Scripture. Students will walk away with practical steps toward building their lives on the firm foundation of the Bible.”

Middle school students are beginning to ask tough questions. Pointing them in the right direction for answers is of utmost importance. If your child is of middle school age, consider having them join the class. It will be fun, informative, challenging, and transformative!

ROCK (High School) Sunday School

By Chris Jo

Another High School Sunday school year in the books.  I’m continually amazed how God can use a giant man child like myself, have parents force their children to wake up on Sunday to go to class, and still use that time to bless us and help us grow closer to him through his word.  This year we had some returning students including fifth year senior Jonathan Kumai.  Hold on, maybe it just seemed like he was a fifth year senior because he was friends with all the seniors from last years class…nope now that I thought about it he was probably a sixth year senior.   As a former graduate of Mountlake Terrace High School I know P.E. is no joke and I’m proud Buddy finally passed in his seventh year. Nathan, Kulani, Maddie, and Nathan Fukuda were also returning students but I will not make any jokes about them since they will still be in my class next year.  The new students included Abbie, Keiran, Sammy, and Kai.  What did we learn?  I learned Keiran spends many hours to get that height on his hair and Hikari bible knowledge greatly exceeded mine and in case you’re wondering, I’m jealous of both those things.  In terms of lessons we decided to cover some big topics including:  Fruit of the Spirits and Bearing Fruit, Prayer, Suffering, and Holy Spirit.  Along with myself, several guest teachers came to teach and share testimony including:  Steph and Jerjou, Ellison, Yon Pier, Stacie Lee and Nathan Fukuda, Amy Li, Simon and Sheila Tsuji.  I can honestly say I enjoyed each and every moment I had with the students and they all were extremely bright, enthusiastic, respectful and a pleasure to have in class.

This year, the freshman class will include Hailey, Sydney, and Hijiri.

CYC (College & Young Career) Sunday School

By Danny Cohen

The CYC ministry is ready for another season to grow closer to Christ and to rekindle the community and fellowship of college students, post-grads, and young adults in the greater Seattle neighborhood!

We’re continually thankful for the teachers (Brian Watanabe, Danny Cohen), the core team (Jennifer Tsuji, Ryan Tsuji, Lauren Mayeda, and Amy Li), the support from the Faith Bible congregation, the help from John and Lisa Tsuji for their oversight/hosting, and for each and every brother and sister that makes up our warm and welcoming “party sweater”.

Last year, we dedicated our Sunday mornings to praying together, participating in both encouraging and challenging discussions, and developing deeper relationships with one another. We did a deep-dive on the Fruits of the Spirit and how to grow them in our daily lives. We finished out the year with Case for Faith: a series focused on reconciling common objections to faith in Christ.

Outside of the “classroom” we had game nights, made our own escape room, served our community, and celebrated family-style for Thanksgiving and Christmas! Most importantly we showed Christ’s love to one another and their families during times of hardship and joy.

Like last year, we are lifting up our fam, lessons, and fellowships to the Lord! While we don’t have a set curriculum quite yet, you can expect more Bible-based teaching, group discussion, and full stomachs (and hearts) in another year of this shared faith journey together.

In 2020, let’s give all glory to God! #agtg

Adult Sunday School

By Pastor Mike Kurtz

For so many years, the adult Sunday School class was taught by Dave Bauson. With he and his family now serving in Thailand as missionaries, it feels like we’ve come to an end of a journey. We give a big thanks to Dave for his many years of sacrificing his Saturday nights week after week in preparation for his classes. It is difficult to imagine moving on without him, but God is spreading the blessing of Dave’s gifts to another part of the world. Thank you, Dave (and his family), for your many years of teaching.

To fill Dave’s shoes, Marty Dong and Titus Kennedy will be teaching this year’s adult class. For those who may not know Titus, he has a doctorate in archaeology, but his knowledge of the Scriptures and his experience teaching the Scriptures is deep and vast. He has taught bible studies overseas as well as locally in other churches and small groups. He brings a thoroughness to his teaching that will benefit all who attend the class.

Marty Dong is an ordained pastor and has preached and taught classes to wide audiences in many churches both here and abroad. He has a MDIV from Trinity Western in addition to undergraduate degrees in history and English. He brings a casual and honest style to his teaching that is relatable and relational.

Both Marty and Titus are welcome additions to our teaching staff. As students you will benefit greatly from their teaching. Beginning this fall, they will be teaching through the book of 1 Peter. Last spring, Dave taught through 2 Peter, so this fall’s course should transition well. Class will meet in the Serving Room at 9:30am.

Adult Sunday School – Gospel Journey

By John and Lisa Tsuji

Do you desire to study and meditate on God’s Word but struggle to do so on a consistent basis?  Do you wish you had a group to study the Bible and pray and share with on a weekly basis but just can’t commit the time or find someone to watch the kids?  Do you wonder how to incorporate God’s Word into your daily life?  Well then, the Gospel Journey SS Class just might be for you.

During the week, we have assigned Bible readings 5 days a week (notice there’s a couple make up days every week if you get a little behind) where we ask for the Holy Spirit’s help in understanding the context of what was written, what it means, and how we should apply it.  There are also a few verses to memorize and supplemental reading, if you’re up to it.  We then get together during the Sunday School time to pray, share, and discuss what we’ve studied that week.  While part of the intent is building up discipline and accountability (which we all need) for consistent time with God, it is done with grace and understanding (which we also need) that we all fall short at times.

As for the content, it’s all about learning the truths that God has revealed to us in His Word, the Bible.  Here is what we studied last year:

Path 1:  Knowing the Gospel Story (John) – Who was Jesus and what did He have to say about Himself, about God and about us?  Very counter-cultural then and now.

Path 2:  Witnessing the Gospel Movement (Acts) – God using “ordinary” people to accomplish His “extraordinary” work through His miraculous power.

Path 3:  Learning the Gospel Doctrines (Romans)

It has been very encouraging to spend this time sharing, learning from what God is teaching others and challenging ourselves in ways we can become more like Christ.  The usual sentiment at the end of every class is that there was so much there – we need more time.

This fall, we look forward to going through Path 4:  Surrendering to the Gospel (Philippians & 1 Peter).  Whether you are still seeking, a brand new believer, or you’ve been a Christian for decades, this class is for you because God’s Word is for everybody.  Also don’t worry if you didn’t attend last year; that is not a prerequisite.  Just bring a hungry and open heart.   We meet at 9:30 in the English Library, and we’d love for you to join us in the Gospel Journey!

Children’s Worship

By Dawn Hamasaki

I can’t believe it’s already September and the start of a new school year for our Children’s Worship classes.  We are so thankful for all the teachers and helpers who gave of their time and efforts to keep this program running so smoothly for our 40 children.  Our rotation of teachers this past year included, Jeff and Sherry Lin, Betty Inouye, Marguerite and Edwin Sandico, Krista and Matt Haith, and Julia Kumai in the Toddler Class; Linda and Josh Takano, Mina and Sherwin Chen, Vickie and Chris Jo, Melissa Nakamura, and Rachel Regner in the PreK/K class; Rieko Kato, Florence Kimura and Sharon Rustia in Primary Church; and Tiana Cheung, and Dawn and Bill Hamasaki in Junior Church.  We also had over 20 helpers assisting in the classes.

The big change this year was our curriculum.  After 20 years with our old curriculum, we switched to a new on-line curriculum.  All the classes, from Toddlers to Junior Church, have been studying the Life of Jesus with this new curriculum. Having everything on-line has made things much easier for the teachers who rotate in our Children’s Worship program.

Another highlight this year was the presentation of the Christmas Musical, Mystery of the Manger, by the Primary and Junior Church children.

We are looking forward to what wonderful things God has planned for us this coming year.  Please continue to remember our team and our children in your prayers.

Sacred Road Summer Mission Trip

by Pastor Mike Kurtz & Amy Li

Pastor Mike Kurtz:

This was my first time joining the Yakima team. It’s one thing to hear the stories from those who worked there in the past; it’s one thing to read about the statistics and the conditions on the reservation, but to see it up close makes it real. One of many things that impressed me was how much the ministry has grown. I can still remember when the Granberrys were trying to raise support and get things started. Today they have a thriving church (and building), mid-week youth programs, a skills training program in the form of t-shirt screening, and so much more. Their reach into the Yakima community continues to grow, and the love of Christ is being seen and heard by everyone. Few lives are left untouched by this ministry today.

As an example of their reach, during my week there, I was assigned to the Village of Hope team to help build tiny houses for people in transition. If you’ve ever seen the tiny village across the street from FBC, that’s exactly what we were doing. The houses were being built in an RV park, each home occupying a slip. While there I met a woman and her two boys. She was just coming out of drug rehab, determined to get her life back on track. Our team intern had the opportunity to share about the youth program, sharing that this would be a positive influence on the kids. We will continue to pray for her and the boys.

I continue to be impressed by the vision and creativity of Sacred Road. There seems to be no limit to the lengths they will go to fulfill the Great Commission. This experience has inspired me toward greater faith. If you desire your faith to be increased, consider joining the Yakima team next year.

Amy Li:

I first decided to join the Yakama team this year because I know that our faith grows most when we find ourselves outside of our comfort zones. In the months leading up to the trip, another reason quickly became apparent. This trip would be a chance to “reset” my heart and mind. Recently, it had become too easy to only think about myself and my own selfish needs, and in turn I saw myself struggling to embrace God’s loving kindness and show His love to others.

One phrase that kept coming back to me during my quiet times on the rez was, “It’s not about me”. There was a lot to unpack with that phrase. At its core, it was God’s gentle reminder to me throughout the trip of why I was there, but also, a challenging prayer that I wanted to take back to my life once I had left the rez. Another aspect of the phrase that God revealed to me was that while I was there to serve, I couldn’t do anything on my own strength. It’s not my own effort, hard work, or anything of my own volition that could produce something of eternal significance. Not without God’s help. People are being saved, hope is being renewed, and a land is changing right on the Yakama reservation, only because of God.

After what was a hard year in my faith journey, I certainly felt like I was running close to empty, without much left to give, but in God’s perfect timing, the first Sunday after arriving, Joshua (Children’s Ministry Staff; Pastor) taught from Isaiah 58 about God’s promise to fill the cup of those who pour themselves out for Christ. So even though the work was hard, and my heart broke over the helpless and hopeless situations all around us, I saw that promise of God fulfilled every morning as I woke up refreshed, in the light of the beautiful desert sunrise. And even more so, I saw that promise being fulfilled in the lives of the people serving at Sacred Road Ministry.

I went to Yakama with a heart struggling to receive and extend God’s love, but left with a heart of gratitude for experiencing His loving kindness in a new way. I saw God’s love at work, invading a dark and messy place. How true it is that His love shines brightest in the darkness, His presence is felt most in the loneliest places, and His healing power is most apparent where there is the greatest hurt.

tl;dr (to summarize), I experienced amazing things in an amazing place because of our amazing God. Come and see for yourself what it’s all about.

New Book for September

The End of America? By Jeff Kinley

One of the most often asked questions regarding Biblical prophecy is what role our country will have in the end times.  Since our country’s beginnings were shaped by the Bible and a Christian worldview, it would appear likely that America would have a major part in the end times scenario.   America is the only superpower in the world today but the Bible does not clearly mention our country.  What are some possible reasons for America apparently not having a significant role in the last days?

In this book, the author discusses America’s spiritual decline and moral decay as the two major contributing factors in her seeming downfall as a “world power and gospel influence.”  He examines America’s Christian roots as well as the road to abandonment according to Romans Chapter 1.  A chapter is devoted to “America’s Holocaust”- the issue of abortion.

He rightly emphasizes that the Bible “devotes a substantial amount of content to primarily one nation – Israel” and that, “geographically speaking, the Bible is written from an Israeli-centric perspective.”  He provides a list of countries named “in prophecies related to Revelation, including what most Bible scholars understand to be their modern day correlation.”

In separate chapters, the author discusses “the coming persecution and what lies ahead for believers,” the rapture of the church that “brings forth both deliverance and divine judgment,” a look at how close we are in terms of “the signs, seasons, and a sense of where we are prophetically,” and a final chapter calling Christians “to rise up, stand strong, and move forward.”

What I appreciate about this author is that he sticks to what the Bible says about coming future events.  He clearly states that when possible scenarios are brought up, they are the opinions of scholars on the issue.  He doesn’t set dates as some in the past have erroneous done.  His purpose is to inform believers about where our country is headed and the need to understand God’s word as it relates to future prophetic events.  This is an interesting and informative book for anyone interested in Bible prophecy and how it relates to America.
