Day 34

ルカの福音書 22章54～62節

54) 彼らはイエスを捕らえ、引いて行き、大祭司の家に連れて入った。ペテロは遠く離れてついて行った。

55) 人々が中庭の真ん中に火をたいて、座り込んでいたので、ペテロも中に交じって腰を下ろした。56) すると、ある召使いの女が、明かりの近くに座っているペテロを目にし、じっと見つめて言った。「この人も、イエスと一緒にいました。」57) しかし、ペテロはそれを否定して、「いや、私はその人を知らない」と言った。

58) しばらくして、ほかの男が彼を見て言った。「あなたも彼らの仲間だ。」しかし、ペテロは「いや、違う」と言った。

59) それから一時間ほどたつと、また別の男が強く主張した。「確かにこの人も彼と一緒だった。ガリラヤ人だから。」60) しかしペテロは、「あなたの言っていることは分からない」と言った。するとすぐ、彼がまだ話しているうちに、鶏が鳴いた。

61) 主は振り向いてペテロを見つめられた。ペテロは、「今日、鶏が鳴く前に、あなたは三度わたしを知らないと言います」と言われた主のことばを思い出した。62) そして、外に出て行って、激しく泣いた。

ディボーショナル

デイリーディボーションでは、これまで2回、ペテロについての箇所を思い巡らしました（Day 4、Day 28）。その他のペテロの言動を、いくつか時系列を追って福音書全体から見ていきます。

• イエスは漁師をしていたペテロを弟子に招かれると、ペテロはすべてを捨ててイエスに従う。
• イエスが弟子たちにご自分が誰なのかと問われた時、ペテロは「神のキリスト」だと明確に答える。
• ペテロが水の上を歩いていたイエスを見つけた時、「主よ。あなたでしたら、私に命じて、水の上を歩いてあなたのところに行かせてください」と願い出る。イエスがそのように命じると、ペテロは強風を見て怖くなり、沈みかけたので、「主よ、助けてください」と叫ぶ。
• イエスが弟子たちの足を洗った時、ペテロは足だけでなく、手や頭も洗ってもらうように願い出る。
• 弟子たちが悪霊につかれた子供の癒しに失敗した直後（ルカ9）、また、イエスが逮捕される前夜、最後の晩餐を分かち合われた直後（ルカ20）、ペテロと他の弟子たちは、弟子たちの間でだれが一番偉いかという議論をする。
• イエスがペテロに、鶏が鳴く前に三度イエスを否定することを予告されると、ペテロは「たとえ、あなたと一緒に死ななければならないとしても、あなたを知らないなどとは決して申しません（マタイ26:35）」と答える。
• イエスがゲッセマネの園で死ぬほどの苦悶の祈りをされる時、ペテロと二人の弟子たちは二度も眠りこけてしまう。
• イエスがユダの裏切りによって逮捕された時、ペテロは剣を持っていたので、大祭司のしもべに切りかかり、右も耳を切り落とす。

これに続くペテロの言動が今日の箇所です。ペテロが三度、イエスを否定することは四つの福音書、すべてに記録されています。この箇所から私たちは何を語られるでしょうか。

一つ目は、ペテロの弟子としての歩みが、私たちの信仰の歩みに酷似していることです。ペテロの言動には情けなさや滑稽さを覚えますが、正直に自分の心を見つめると、実に私たちの歩みと重なるのです。しかし、イエスはペテロのように最後まで情けない者を、そして、私たちのように不完全な者を弟子として招かれているのです。

二つ目は、ペテロが失敗した時のイエス様の眼差しです。「主は振り向いてペテロを見つめられた（61節）。」この記述はルカだけが記録しています。この時のイエスの眼差しはどのようなものだったでしょうか。呆れたり、諦めたり、怒りに満ちた眼差しでしょうか。いや、きっとルカ15章で読んだ放蕩息子の父親のような眼差しだったのでしょう。なお、放蕩息子のたとえ話もルカだけが記録しており、子どもに対する父なる神の愛を描いている点で共通した側面があります。または、イエスに近づいた罪深い女（ルカ 7）や長血を患っていた女(ルカ 9)に対するような眼差しだったしょう。

主イエスがペテロを見つめられた眼差しは、愛と憐れみに満ちていました。その確固たる証拠は、今日の箇所の直前に言われたイエスの言葉です。「しかし、わたしはあなたのために、あなたの信仰が亡くならないように祈りました。ですから、あなたは立ち直ったら、兄弟たちを力づけてやりなさい（ルカ22:32）。」イエスはペテロの弱さを十分、知っていました。そして、事前にとりなり祈っておられたのです。さらに、励ましの声をかけられました。イエスは、私たちの弱さを十分に知っておられます。そして、私のために今もとりなし祈り（ローマ8:34、へブル7:25）、励ましておられます。

私たちは、イエスが未熟な私たちをあえて弟子として招かれていることに気づくでしょうか。私たちが信仰の歩みで挫折する時、イエスの愛の眼差しに気づくでしょうか。今日の箇所からはそのようなことを語られます。

問いかけ

私たちが自分の罪や弱さを実感し、激しく悔やまれる時、どのようにしてイエスの眼差しに気づくことができるでしょうか。

祈り

神様、ペテロの歩みを通して、自分の信仰の歩みが示されました。これまで、自分の罪や弱さにあまり気づくことがありませんでした。また、気づいた時には失望し、あなたの愛の眼差しに気づくことがありませんでした。私を憐れんでください。あなたが私たちの弱さを見つめがら、十字架の道を進まれたことを覚えさせてください。イエスの御名によって祈ります。アーメン。

Silence and Stillness before God (2 minutes)

Luke 22:54-62

54) Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.

55) And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56) A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.” 57) But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.

58) A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” “Man, I am not!” Peter replied.

59) About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.” 60) Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.

61) The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62) And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Devotional

In our Lent Daily Devotionals, we have meditated on the passages about Peter twice so far (Day 4 & Day 28). We’d like to also look at some of other stories about Peter from the entire Gospels in chronological order.

• When Jesus invites Peter, a Galilean fisherman, to become His disciple, Peter leaves everything and follows Jesus.
• When Jesus asks his disciples who he is, Peter clearly answers, saying “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. (Matt. 16:16)”
• When Peter finds Jesus walking on the water, he says to him, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” But, when Jesus invites him to do so, Peter sees the wind and he is afraid, beginning to sink, and cries out, saying “Lord, save me! (Matt. 14:28-30)
• When Jesus washes the disciples’ feet, Peter asks Jesus to wash his hands and head as well (Jn. 13:9).
• Immediately after the disciples fail to heal a child possessed by an evil spirit (Luke 9), and also immediately after Jesus shares the Last Supper the night before His arrest (Lk. 20), Peter and the other disciples argue about who is the greatest among them.
• When Jesus announces to Peter that he will deny Him three times before the rooster crows, Peter replies, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you (Matt. 26:35).”
• As Jesus prays in agony to the point of death in the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter and the two disciples fall asleep twice.
• When Jesus was betrayed by Judas and was arrested, Peter has a sword, draws it and strikes the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear (Jn. 18:10).

Then, we read today’s passage. Peter’s denial of Jesus three times is recorded in all four Gospels. What is this passage telling us today?

First, we find that the ways Peter follows Christ as his disciple is very similar to our own journey of faith as his disciple. Peter’s words and actions may seem pathetic and even funny, but if we honestly look into our own hearts, we will find some similarity in us. Nonetheless, Jesus invites his disciples to follow him, who are immature and imperfect to the end, like Peter and like us.

The second is the way Jesus looks at Peter when he fails. “The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. (v. 61).” This account is recorded only in Luke. I wonder how Jesus looked at Peter at the very moment. Did Jesus look at Peter in disappointment, disgust, or indignation? I am sure Jesus looked at him like the father of the Prodigal Son we read about in Luke 15. The parable of the Prodigal Son, also recorded only in Luke, shares a similar aspect in that it depicts the love of God the Father for His children. Or, perhaps it was like when Jesus looked at the sinful woman who approached Jesus (Luke 7), or the woman who had long-suffering bleeding (Luke 8), which we recently meditated on.

The way Jesus looked at Peter should be full of love and compassion. As an evidence, we know this from Jesus’ words just before today’s passage. “But I have prayed for you, Simon (Peter), that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers (Lk. 22:32).” Jesus fully knew Peter’s weaknesses. So, He prayed for him beforehand. He also encouraged him. Likewise, Jesus fully knows our weaknesses. And, He still prays for us today as our Intercessor (Rom. 8:34; Heb. 7:25), and encourages us .

Are we aware that Jesus still invites us who are imperfect and immature to follow him as his disciples? Are we aware that Jesus looks straight at us but in love and compassion, when we fail to follow him. Today’s passage speaks to us of such things.

Reflection 

When we fail and get disappointed by our own sins and weaknesses, how can we be aware that Jesus looks at us in love and compassion?

Prayer

Lord, through Peter’s walk with you, you showed me how frail I am in my journey of faith. Sometimes, I was not aware of my sins and weaknesses. Even when I realized them, I was not aware that you are looking at me, not in disappointment, but in love. Have mercy. Help me remember that as you fully know my sins and weaknesses, you still followed the way of the cross on my behalf. In your name, amen.
