創世記 2章7～17節
7) 神である主は、その大地のちりで人を形造り、その鼻にいのちの息を吹き込まれた。それで人は生きるものとなった。8) 神である主は東の方のエデンに園を設け、そこにご自分が形造った人を置かれた。9) 神である主は、その土地に、見るからに好ましく、食べるのに良いすべての木を、そして、園の中央にいのちの木を、また善悪の知識の木を生えさせた。
10) 一つの川がエデンから湧き出て、園を潤していた。それは園から分かれて、四つの源流となっていた。11) 第一のものの名はピション。それはハビラの全土を巡って流れていた。そこには金があった。12) その地の金は良質で、そこにはベドラハとショハム石もあった。13) 第二の川の名はギホン。それはクシュの全土を巡って流れていた。14) 第三の川の名はティグリス。それはアッシュルの東を流れていた。第四の川、それはユーフラテスである。
15) 神である主は人を連れて来て、エデンの園に置き、そこを耕させ、また守らせた。16) 神である主は人に命じられた。
「あなたは園のどの木からでも思いのまま食べてよい。17) しかし、善悪の知識の木からは、食べてはならない。その木から食べるとき、あなたは必ず死ぬ。」

今日の御言葉から、あなたはどのようなことを語られますか？ディボーションをするときには、すぐに解説を読まず、神様があなたという個人に対して、直接、何を語ろうとしているのか、5分ほど時間をとって祈ってみてください。

それぞれ様々なことを示されたと思います。それを踏まえて、ここでは私が個人的に示されたことの中から一つ、お分かちしたいと思います。それは「デイリーディボーションは、そもそもなぜするのか？」という問いでした。
私たちは普段の生活の中で、ほとんど時間、自分の思いのままに動いています。これは強ち悪いことでありません。エデンの園の管理を任されていたアダムとイブもそうでした。神は人間のために、エデンの園に「見るからに好ましく、食べるのに良いすべての木（9節）」を生えさせました。リンゴ、梨、マンゴー、ぶどう、クルミ、いちごなど、ありとあらゆる木があったでしょう。そして、神は彼らに「命じて」、どの木からでも「思いのまま（16節）」食べてよいと言われたのです。神は、私たち一人ひとりに働きを与えられ、その働きの実りを思う存分に味わえるよう、選択の自由を与えて下さいました。
しかし、同時に、神は「園の中央」に「いのちの木を、また善悪の知識の木」を生えさせ、その木からは、決して食べてはならないと言われました。これも、他の木の実からは「思いのまま」食べて良いと言われたのと同様、神様が「命じられたこと」でした。つまり、神の働きを任された私たちには、選択の自由が与えられたものの、何が正しく、何が正しくないかの判断だけは、神のみがされるいうことです。私たちの働きの中心（＝園の中央）に、神の判断（＝善悪の知識の木）を据えるのです。
これを踏まえて、今、まさに行っているデイリーディボーションの目的を考えます。私たちがディボーションをする目的は、自分の働きを止め、自分の考え（判断）を手放し、神に信頼することです。この神への信頼の欠如こそが、エデンの園でアダムとイブが犯した罪の本質でした。私たちは、学校、家事、育児、仕事、教会など、様々な神様の働きをする中で、自分の判断や考えで進めていこうとします。しかし、毎日、立ち止まる必要があります。さらに、立ち止まるだけでなく、神の考えを聞き、それに従う必要があるのです。そのために、神様は日々の御言葉を与えて下さっているのです。
時々、私たちは、デイリーディボーションをする目的は、自分に役に立つからだと考えることがあります。確かに、御言葉は日々の歩みの支えになります。しかし、ともすれば、「自分の」考えや働きに合わせて、神からのサポートを受けるためにディボーションをしようと試みていることがあります。しかし、それは全く逆でしょう。私たちは、家庭であれ、仕事であれ、自分が望む成功のためにディボーションをするのではありません。自分の考えに神の考えを合わさせたり、自分にとって「役に立つ」聖書の言葉を探すために、ディボーションをするのではありません。ディボーションをする目的は、私たちが神の働き（エデンの園の働き）をするときに、神の考えが中心（園の中央の木）になるためです。そのために、私たちは毎日、立ち止まり、自分の考えや働きを手放し、神の言葉を聞きたいのです。
問いかけ
デイリーディボーションの中で、神の考えが中心になるために、今日、どのような自分の思いや考えを手放すように、招かれていると思いますか？
祈り
主よ、どうぞ私を憐れんでください。自分ではなく、あなただけを中心とできるように、私の心を再調整してください。あなたから与えられた働きをするとき、どんなことでも、あなたの考えと判断を求め、あなたを喜び、あなたをほめたたえることができるようにしてください。今日、立ち止まり、あなたへ心を向ける機会を与えて下さり、感謝します。今日一日をあなたにおささげします。どうぞ導いてください。主に御名によって祈ります。アーメン。

Silence and Stillness before God (2 minutes)
Genesis 2:7-17
7) Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. 8) Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9) The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10) A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11) The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12) The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there. 13) The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. 14) The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15) The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16) And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17) but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

What is God speaking to you personally through today’s verse? Before reading devotionals, I’d encourage you to take 5 minutes to reflect on the passage, prayerfully asking God to discern what He may want to communicate with you.

God speaks to our heart through His Word, and we can learn so many things even from our familiar verses that we have read many times. Here is what God spoke to me personally today, and I would like to share with you. Through the passage, God gave me a question, “Why do you do Daily Devotional in the first place?”
In our daily lives, we spend most of our time doing things as we desire. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Actually, it was the same with Adam and Eve, who were given God’s purpose to work and take care of the Garden of Eden. There, God made for them all kinds of trees to grow “that were pleasing to the eye and good for food (v.9).” I am sure there were apples, pears, mangoes, grapes, walnuts, strawberries, and all kinds of trees. And, God “commanded (v.16)” the man to feel “free to eat from any tree in the garden” as they desired. God has given the man the freedom to choose and enjoy whatever fruits he wanted as a result of his work in the garden.
At the same time, however, God made “the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” grow “in the middle of the garden.” And, he told the man never to eat from that tree. Like when God told the man to eat from whichever tree he desired to, again, God “commanded” the man not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. What does this mean to us? As we are granted the freedom to enjoy God’s work and His creation, we are to place God’s Will at the center of our work.
With this in mind, let us consider the very purpose of Daily Devotionals we are conducting right now. The purpose of our devotional is to stop our work and surrender our thoughts to God’s knowledge, and trust in Him. Lack of trust was the essence of the sin committed by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Sometimes, we try to proceed with our own thoughts and judgments as we do various works that God called us to engage with, whether in school, home, workplace, or church. But, still, each day we need to stop and surrender to God in trust. Not only do we need to stop, but we need to listen to God and actually follow Him. That is why God gives us His Word each day.
Sometimes, we think that the purpose of Daily Devotionals is because it is useful in our daily life. Certainly, the Word of God can help us in our daily walk with Him. But sometimes, we are trying to make God’s Word our assistance or advice so that we can pursue the outcomes in our life in accordance with “our” knowledge and judgement. But, it would be quite the opposite. We do not do devotionals for sake of the success we desire, whether at home or at work. We do not do devotionals to mold God’s knowledge into ours, or to find words in the Scripture that seem “useful” to us. The purpose of daily devotionals is so that when we do God’s work (the work of the Garden of Eden), God’s knowledge become central (the tree in the middle of the garden). For this reason, we want to reorient our heart to God each day, by stopping, surrendering our thoughts and works, and trusting Him.

Prayer
Lord, help me to grab hold of you today. I need you. Set me free to begin reorienting my life around you, and you alone. Help me to pay attention to and honor how you have uniquely made me. Thank you for the gift of rest. In Jesus’ name, amen.
