ルカの福音書 8章11～15節
11) このたとえの意味はこうです。種は神のことばです。
12) 道端に落ちたものとは、みことばを聞いても信じて救われないように、後で悪魔が来て、その心からみことばを取り去ってしまう、そのような人たちのことです。
13) 岩の上に落ちたものとは、みことばを聞くと喜んで受け入れるのですが、根がないので、しばらくは信じていても試練のときに身を引いてしまう、そのような人たちのことです。
14) 茨の中に落ちたものとは、こういう人たちのことです。彼らはみことばを聞いたのですが、時がたつにつれ、生活における思い煩いや、富や、快楽でふさがれて、実が熟すまでになりません。
15) しかし、良い地に落ちたものとは、こういう人たちのことです。彼らは立派な良い心でみことばを聞いて、それをしっかり守り、忍耐して実を結びます。
ディボーショナル
あるとき、イエスは「種を蒔く人」のたとえ話を話されました。それは次のようなものです。種を蒔く人が種を蒔いていると、ある種は道端に落ちて、人に踏みつけられ、鳥に食べられてしまいました。別の種は岩地に落ちて、生長したが、水分がなかったので枯れてしまいました。また別の種は茨の中に落ちて、茨が塞いで生えることができませんでした。しかし、ある種は良い地に落ちて、生長して百倍の実を結びました。
今日の箇所は、このたとえ話について、イエスご自身による解説です。クリスチャンであれば、よく知っていると思います。まずは冒頭にもあるように、蒔かれた種とは神の言葉のことです。しかし、その種が実りを結ぶかどうかは、種を受け入れる土壌である私たちの心によって決まります。従って、神の言葉が受け入れられ、深く根ざし、また、生長して実りを結ぶような「良い地」のように、私たちの心が変えられる必要があります。よく知られている教えです。
今日は、「神の言葉が種であること」について注目したいと思います。なぜイエスは神の言葉を種に例えられたのでしょうか。種とは、実りそのものではなく、実りをもたらす「力と可能性」を秘めているものです。その場では、一見すると、無力で役に立たないように思われます。また、種が根ざし、生長して、実が熟するためには、長い月日がかかります。その間には、天候の良い日もあれば、雪や嵐、干ばつの日もあるでしょう。
同じように、力と可能性を秘めた神の言葉は、毎日ディボーションをするその日には、すぐに力や価値を感じないかもしれません。全く関心を覚えず、聞き流したり、忘れてしまうことがあります。また、私たちの生き方を変えるほどの実りを結ばせるまでに、「試練（13節）」、「生活における思い煩いや、富み、快楽（14節）」によって、途中で諦めてしまいます。
しかし、種である神の言葉には本当はどんな力を秘められるのかを知る人は、御言葉を心に留めます。その言葉の意味が全て分からなくとも、忍耐しながら実践に移し続けます（15節）。そして、気づけば、自分の力では絶対に得ることができなかった実り、信じられないような力を経験するのです。その実りとは、苦しみの中でも揺るがされない「平安」、犠牲を伴っても他者を赦し、仕えることのできる「愛」、喜べない状況でも不思議と満たされる「感謝」、といったものです。これは理屈では説明できないもので、経験した人にしか分からない力です。
では、種である神の言葉にはどんな力が秘められているのでしょうか。それは、義務や道徳によって束縛する力ではなく、愛によって自由にさせる力です。神の言葉を知ることによって、どれほど自分が神から愛されているかが分かります。この愛は、家族であれ、夫婦であれ、親友であれ、この世界の誰とも比べることはできません。神の言葉が神の愛であることに気づくこと。この気づきこそが、私たちの心を「良い地」に変えます。その時には、どんなに弱くても、どんなに苦しくても、最後には、私たちの生き方が根底から覆えされるほどの実りを経験するのです。
問いかけ
立ち止まって、これまでのディボーションを振り返り、どのような種を神様が蒔いて下さったか、思い巡らせてみましょう。
祈り
主よ、あなたの愛が詰まったあなたの言葉を感謝します。これまでは「恵まれない」、「役に立たない」といった感情に頼って、すぐに捨ててしまったり、見向きもしないことがありました。または、途中で目先の苦しさや快楽の方に目を奪われました。苦しみも快楽も一時的なものだということを忘れて、永遠の価値のあるものを見失っていました。どうぞ赦してください。あなたの言葉を通して、約束されている実りと力に期待します。忍耐を与えて下さい。主の御名によって祈ります。アーメン。

Silence and Stillness before God (2 minutes)
Luke 8:11-15
11) “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.
12) Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.
13) Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.
14) The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.
15) But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.
Devotional
Today’s passage is Jesus’ commentary on his parable of the Sower, by Himself. Most of us know this story and it’s meaning well. The seed is the Word of God. But, fruits of the seed depends on our heart, which is the soil that accepts the seed. So, our heart needs to be transformed to be like “good soil” where the Word of God is accepted, deeply rooted, and grows to bear fruit. We probably know this teaching very well.
What we want to reflect upon today is “how” can our heart be transformed to be like good soil. We will ponder over Jesus’ analogy of His Word as the seed. Why did He compare the Word of God to a seed? A seed is not the fruit itself, but something that has the power and potential to bring forth fruit. At the moment, seeds appear to be unattractive, helpless, and useless. Also, they take months take root, grow, and ripen into fruit. In the meantime, there will be good weather but also snow, storms, and drought.
In the same way, the Word of God, with all its power and potential, may not immediately feel powerful or valuable on that day of daily devotions. We may not find any interest in it, or we will easily forget it. We may also give up along the way due to “the time of testing (v. 13)” and “life’s worries, riches, and pleasures (v. 14)” before it bears fruit enough to transform our life.
But, those who know what power is actually hidden in the seed, take the Word to heart. Even if we don’t fully understand the meaning of the Word, we persevere and continue to put it into practice (v. 15). And when we realize it, they experience incredible power, a fruit that they could never have obtained on their own. These fruits are “peace” that is unshakable in the midst of suffering, “love” that enables us to forgive and serve others even at the cost of our own lives, and “gratitude” that mysteriously fills us up even during dark times. This is a power that cannot be explained by logic, but can only be understood by those who have experienced it.
So what power is hidden in the Word of God, the seed? It is not the power that binds us through rules or morality, but the power that sets us free through His love. By knowing God’s Word, we know how much we are loved by God. This love cannot be compared to anyone else in the world, whether the love of family, spouse, or best friends. It is our awareness of God’s love that actually transforms our hearts into “good soil”. When this happens, no matter how weak we are, no matter how painful, we will actually bear fruit in our life. Our heart will be made completely new upside-down, and this transformation continues on and on, day by day.

Pause and reflect on the days of your daily devotions. What seeds from God might be coming to you that you don’t want to miss?
Prayer
Lord, I praise you because your love seeks my good in any and every situation. Forgive me for the seeds that I have squandered. Soften my heart to surrender to your will in and through me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
