コリント人への手紙第二 4章7～11節
7) 私たちは、この宝を土の器の中に入れています。それは、この測り知れない力が神のものであって、私たちから出たものではないことが明らかになるためです。
8) 私たちは四方八方から苦しめられますが、窮することはありません。途方に暮れますが、行き詰まることはありません。
9) 迫害されますが、見捨てられることはありません。倒されますが、滅びません。
10) 私たちは、いつもイエスの死を身に帯びています。それはまた、イエスのいのちが私たちの身に現れるためです。
11) 私たち生きている者は、イエスのために絶えず死に渡されています。それはまた、イエスのいのちが私たちの死ぬべき肉体において現れるためです。

簡単に言えば、私たちのもろい身体の中に宝を入れると、なんと不思議、不死身の身体に変えられるというのです。もともと私たちは、小石がコツンと当たっただけでも、すぐにヒビが入ってしまうほど壊れやすいものでした。小さな失敗や苦しみ、人間関係の不和でも心が掻き乱され、人を赦したり、状況を受け入れることができませんでした。しかし、宝を中に入れているだけで、どんな方向から圧力をかけられても割れることなく、苦しんでも希望を失わず、信仰ゆえに攻撃されても孤立せず、打ちのめされてもまた立ち上がる、というのです。まるで不死身です。
もちろんこれは霊的な例えですが、10節、11節では、この「測り知れない力（7節）」が現わされるためには、私たちは「イエスの死」を経験する必要があると教えています。ここでイエスの十字架の死を経験するとは、自分に死ぬことです。自分が無に等しいことを悟り、プライドや怒りを手放し、自分の夢や考えを捨てることです。
ピーター・スキャゼロは、私たちがどんなにキリストに従おうとしても、十字架の死まではなかなか従えないと指摘しています。私たちは、水がぶどう酒に変えられるパーティーに参加したり、温かな日差しの照らすビーチでイエス様の説教を聞くことはできます。しかし、いざ十字架の死に従うとなれば、足がすくんでしまうのです。十字架への道を独りで歩むのは、あまりに恐いからです。
しかし、十字架の死の先に約束されているものは、イエスの復活のいのちです。イエスのいのちを経験するとは、無力でもろい私たちが「不死身」を着せられることです。つまり、どんな苦しみにも耐えることができる「理解できない力」を得て、「不死身の生き方」を送ることが、実際にできるのです。心についての例えですが、誇張や綺麗事ではありません。実際に、そのような生き方に変えられるのです。だからこそ「私たち生きている者は、イエスのために絶えず死に渡されています。それはまた、イエスのいのちが私たちの死ぬべき肉体において現れるためです。（11節）」
私たちが内に入れた「宝」とは、イエスの死といのちです。私たちは今日もその宝を経験する必要があるのです。
問いかけ
「イエスのいのち」を経験するために、今日は、どのように「イエスの死」を経験できるでしょうか。
今日、神様が手放すように願われている自分のプライド、怒り、考え、夢は何でしょうか。
祈り
主よ。十字架の下でひざまづき、あなたの死を経験することをいつも避けてきました。どうぞ恐れを取り除き、あなたの十字架を通してあなたと隣人を愛せるように変えてください。あなたが先に成し遂げて下さった完全な死と復活を、どうか私も経験できるように助けてください。あなたの御名によって祈ります。アーメン。

2 Corinthians 4:7-11
7) But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.
8) We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9) persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
10) We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.
11) For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body.
Devotional
Simply put, if we have the treasure in our fragile bodies, we can be transformed into super bodies. We were so fragile that even a small pebble hitting us with a bump would immediately cause us to crack. Even the smallest failure, suffering, or discord in a relationship could stir our hearts, making it impossible for us to forgive others or accept the situation. However, just by keeping the treasure inside, we would not crack no matter what direction the pressure came from, we would not lose hope even if we suffered, we would not isolate ourselves even if we were attacked because of our faith, and we would get up again even if we were struck down. This is super body.
Of course, this is a spiritual analogy, but verses 10 and 11 tell us that we need to experience “the death of Jesus” in order to gain this “all-surpassing power (v. 7)” from God. To experience the death of Jesus’ cross means to die to self. It is to be reduced to nothing, surrendering our pride and anger, and abandoning our dreams and desires.
Peter Scazzero points out that normally we will follow Christ anywhere except to the death of the cross. We can attend a party where water is turned into wine, or hear Jesus preach on a warm sunny beach. But when it comes to following the death of the cross, we are so slow on our feet. It is too scary to walk the path to the cross alone.
What is promised beyond the death of the cross, however, is the life of Jesus. To experience the life of Jesus to be clothed with the “super body,” knowing we are helpless and fragile. In other words, we can actually live a “super life” by gaining the all-surpassing power to endure any suffering. Again, this is an analogy about our soul, but at least this is not an exaggeration or cheap advice. Our old life will be actually transformed to a new life. That is “for we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body.”
The treasure we have in our life is the death and life of Jesus. Today, we want to experience this treasure once again.

How can you experience “the death of Jesus” today, so that you may experience “the life of Jesus?”

Prayer
Lord, everything in me kicks against going to the foot of the cross where you will root out of me all that is not of you. Help me not to fear the “deaths” it will take for me to be transformed into a free person who loves you and others well. Have mercy on me, O Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
