ローマへの手紙 11章33～36節

33) ああ、神の知恵と知識の富は、なんと深いことでしょう。神のさばきはなんと知り尽くしがたく、神の道はなんと極めがたいことでしょう。

34) 「だれが主の心を知っているのですか。 だれが主の助言者になったのですか。35) だれがまず主に与え、主から報いを受けるのですか。」

36) すべてのものが神から発し、神によって成り、神に至るのです。この神に、栄光がとこしえにありますように。アーメン。

信仰の歩みの中で、私たちは時々、壁にぶつかります。ずっと祈っているのに、状況が一向に変わらない時。信仰を持ったのに、今でも取り除けない罪がある時。あるいは、罪は犯していないのに不幸を経験したり、他人から責められたり、中傷される時。このような壁にぶつかった時、真剣に向き合い、自分の心に正直になる人であれば、「神様、なぜですか！」と叫びたくなります。実際、詩篇の作者はそれをたくさんの詩に書いています。

壁にぶつかった時、今日の御言葉は二つのことを知るように教えています。それは、①神様の知恵や計画は、私たちには理解できないこと（33～35節）と、②神様が全てを支配されていること（36節）です。しかし、特に①について、私たちには誤解や不安があります。

私たちは時々、世のすべての不条理を理路整然と理解し、判断(judge、33節)できることが信仰深いことだと誤解しています。それは、自分や他人を自分で判断（ジャッジ）する時です。自分に対して「信仰を持ったのに、なかなか変わらない私は救われていない」と判断し、不安や諦めに陥ります。あるいは、他人の苦しみに対して、ヨブの三人の友人のように、それが信仰が成長する機会だと勝手に判断して、心ないアドバイスをかけたりします。自分でも他人でも、心の底でどこか自業自得だと判断して、つきはなしてしまうのです。

しかし、今日の御言葉は、罪によるものであってもそうでなくても、自分と他人が経験する苦しみは、私たちには「そもそも分かり得ない」と教えています。なぜなら、私たちの知恵は神の知恵には遠く及ばないからです。その神が、すべてをコントロールされているのです。

ある友人のクリスチャンの脳科学者とお話ししたことを思い出します。彼は、ハーバード大学の研究者でノーベル賞を受賞した利根川進博士の愛弟子でした。彼はこう言っていました。「もしIQ（知能指数）が1のアリがIQが100の人間の論理や思考を理解できないとしたら、IQ100の人間がIQが1億の神の考えを理解できないことは至極、当たり前のことだ。」

私たちの持つべき信仰は、「正しいことをすべて知り、何でも、誰でも判断できる」ものとは正反対です。私たちの信仰は、自分には分からないが、神様が分かっていることを認めることから始まります。いわゆる「無知の知」に加え、「全知全能の神の知」です。

私たちが「神様、なぜですか！」と叫びたくなる苦しい時でも、「神のミステリー」があることを認めるなら、神に近づくことができます。その時こそ、私たちは変えられるのです。なぜなら、私たちには一つ確かなことを知っているからです。それは、神はどんな時も私たちを愛され、福音という約束が与えられていることです。

問いかけ

私たちが正直に「分かりません」と認めるべきことは何でしょうか。その時、どのように神様に頼れるでしょうか。

祈り

神様。時々、私は自分で何でも分かっていると誤解していました。あるいは、私の考えや知恵に合わせて、あなたが助けて下さると思うことがありました。どうぞ赦してください。あなたの知恵と知識はあまりに深く、私は到底及びません。周りの状況を見て、自分の判断に頼るのではなく、あなたの判断にゆだねることができますように。助けてください。主イエスの御名によって祈ります。アーメン。

Silence and Stillness before God (2 minutes)

Romans 11:33-36

33) Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

34) “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” 35) “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?”

36) For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Devotional

In our journey of faith, we sometimes hit the wall. That happens when we have been praying for a long time, but the situation never seems to change. That happens when we come to faith, but we still suffer from our lingering sins. Or, when we experience sufferings, or are criticized or mistreated by others even though it is not our fault. Whenever we encounter such a wall, if we become honest and sincere, you may want to cry out, “Why, God!” In fact, we see such honest struggles in many of the songs in Psalms.

When we hit the wall, today’s verse tells us to learn two things. It it to learn that (1) God’s wisdom and plans are unsearchable and beyond understanding (vv. 33-35) and (2) it is God who is in control of everything (v. 36). But, sometimes we fall into misunderstanding and fear, especially regarding (1).

We sometimes misunderstand that faithfulness is about having an ability to understand everything and boldly judge everything (v. 33). We find that in ourselves when we actually judge ourselves or others. We may judge ourselves by saying, “I am not worthy or saved because my life has not been fully transformed even after coming to faith.” Then, we fall into anxiety and bitterness. Or, like Job’s three friends, we may judge others who are in pain that God is leading them to grow in faith through such suffering, which makes us give some ungracious and unkind advises. Deep down, we judge ourselves and others that sufferings are caused by their faults, ended up silently abandoning them.

But today’s verse tells us that the suffering we and others experience, whether due to sin or not, is “unsearchable” to us. We cannot understand our suffering because our wisdom is far short of God’s wisdom. And it is this God who is in control of everything.

I remember speaking with a friend of mine who is a Christian brain scientist at Harvard. He was a favorite disciple of Dr. Susumu Tonegawa who won the Nobel Prize. He shared with me a story. “If an ant with an IQ of 1 cannot understand the logic and thoughts of a man with an IQ of 100, it is perfectly natural that a man with an IQ of 100 cannot understand the thoughts of a God with an IQ of 100 million.”

The faith we should pursue is the opposite of knowing what is right or wrong by ourselves, or being able to judge anything or anyone. Our faith begins with humbly admitting that “I don’t know, but God knows”. We don’t only believe that we are ignorant, but God is omniscient.

Sometimes we hit the wall and shout out to God “why!” But, if we embrace divine mystery, we will be drawn closer to God, even in those difficult times. Actually, it is when we are invited to be transformed by God. It is because we know one thing for certain. God loves us in every moment and He has given us the promise of the Good News.

Reflection 

What are the things that you honestly want admit and say, “I don’t know”? Then, how can you trust God?

Prayer

Forgive me, Father, for at times treating you as if you were my personal assistant or secretary. Your ways are unsearchable and beyond understanding. Help me to put my trust in you and not in my circumstances. In your presence, I am silenced. In Jesus’ name, amen.
