ローマ人への手紙8章35～38節
35) だれが、私たちをキリストの愛から引き離すのですか。苦難ですか、苦悩ですか、迫害ですか、飢えですか、裸ですか、危険ですか、剣ですか。36) こう書かれています。「あなたのために、私たちは休みなく殺され、屠られる羊と見なされています。」
37) しかし、これらすべてにおいても、私たちを愛してくださった方によって、私たちは圧倒的な勝利者です。38) 私はこう確信しています。死も、いのちも、御使いたちも、支配者たちも、今あるものも、後に来るものも、力あるものも、39) 高いところにあるものも、深いところにあるものも、そのほかのどんな被造物も、私たちの主キリスト・イエスにある神の愛から、私たちを引き離すことはできません。
ディボーショナル
「どんなものも、私たちの主キリスト・イエスにある神の愛から私たちを引き離すことはできない。」これは、とても力強い、真実な御言葉です。その反面、今も私たちをキリストの愛から引き離そうとするものがあるのは確かです。ここでパウロは苦難、苦悩、迫害、飢え、裸、危険、剣を挙げています。私たちにとっては何でしょうか？
パウロが挙げたように、確かに私たちは外的なものから影響を受けます。例えば、病気、死、失敗、失恋、そして、コロナウィルスです。一方、内的なものが私たちを神の愛から引き離そうとすることも多くあります。それは、特に「承認欲求（人から認められたい欲求）」と「社会的欲求（人とつながりたい欲求）」です。
この二つは、有名なマズローの欲求5段階説の上位にも挙げられますが、デジタル世界、個人主義社会に生きる私たちに大きな影響を与えています。それ自体が悪ではありませんが、実に私たちはそれらの欲求に翻弄されています。例えば、SNSは「いいね！」や「フォロワー」を獲得することで承認欲求を満たし、そうしながら人とつながることで、同時に社会的欲求も満たそうとするものだと言えます。2022年では世界で40億人以上がSNSに登録していると言われ、私たちにとっても生活に欠かせないものになっています。一方、アメリカでも日本でも、ここ200年の歴史を見ると、信仰を持たない人の割合は、毎年過去最大を更新しています。私たちは「人から認められたい」、「人とつながりたい」という欲求が強い時代を生きています。それは、神から離れている時代でもあります。
それでも、パウロは私たち信仰者へ向かって言うでしょう。「しかし、これらすべてにおいても、私たちを愛してくださった方によって、私たちは圧倒的な勝利者です。」信仰者には、どんな状況でも「神から認められ（愛され）」、「神とのつながり」が与えられていることが約束されています。私たちのすべきことは、頑張って神の承認や、神とのつながりを勝ち取ることでなく、ただその福音の約束に頼ることです。その時、不思議と承認欲求や社会的欲求に翻弄される心がフェードアウトしていきます。なぜなら、キリストが既に十字架の上で勝利してくださったからです。
問いかけ
人から認められたい思いや、人とつながりたい思いが、神の愛から引き離そうとすることはありますか？そのような時、あなたはどうしますか？
祈り
神様、今日、私に勇気を与えて下さい。人からの承認や人とのつながりではなく、あなたの愛やあなたとのつながりを受け取る勇気を与えて下さい。主の御名によって祈ります。アーメン。

Silence and Stillness before God (2 minutes)
Romans 8:35-39
35) Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36) As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
37) No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38) For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
39) neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Devotional
“Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This is such a true and powerful Word. On the other hand, there are certainly things that still try to separate us from the love of Christ. Here Paul lists trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, sword. What are they for us?
As Paul mentioned, we are certainly affected by external things. For example, illness, death, failure, breakup, and coronavirus. On the other hand, there are many internal things that try to pull us away from God’s love. That is especially “esteem needs” (need for approval) and “love and belongingness needs” (need for connection).
These two, which are also listed at the top of the famous Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, have a great impact on us in our digital world and individualistic society. They are not evil in themselves, but we are indeed too vulnerable to such desires. For example, SNS motivate people to gain approval by “likes” and “followers,” and also to connect people through such desire for approval. By 2022, it is estimated that more than 4 billion people worldwide have already signed up for any sort of SNS, making them an integral part of their lives. On the other hand, in the last 200 years of history, both in the U.S. and in Japan, the believers are marking the lowest percentage of the population each year. We are living in a time when people have an obsessed desire to be accepted by others, and to connect with others. It is also a time of separation from God.
All said, Paul would say to us believers nevertheless. “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” What believers have is this promise that they are “approved (loved) by God” and “connected to God” in all circumstances. All we have to do is not try hard to win God’s approval or connection, but simply discover and trust the promise of the Gospel. When we do that, our hearts, which are all too often disturbed by the desires, will fade away. It is because Christ has already conquered everything on the cross for us.
Reflection
Do you find that your desire to be accepted by others or to connect with others separate you from from God’s love? What would you do when this happens?
Prayer
Lord, grant me courage today. Give me the courage to receive your love and connection with you, not approval from others or connection with others. In the name of the Lord. Amen.
