マルコの福音書 1章33～38節
33) こうして町中の人が戸口に集まって来た。
34) イエスは、様々な病気にかかっている多くの人を癒やされた。また、多くの悪霊を追い出し、悪霊どもがものを言うのをお許しにならなかった。彼らがイエスのことを知っていたからである。
35) さて、イエスは朝早く、まだ暗いうちに起きて寂しいところに出かけて行き、そこで祈っておられた。
36) すると、シモンとその仲間たちがイエスの後を追って来て 37) 彼を見つけ、「皆があなたを捜しています」と言った。
38) イエスは彼らに言われた。「さあ、近くにある別の町や村へ行こう。わたしはそこでも福音を伝えよう。そのために、わたしは出て来たのだから。」

霊的な成熟は、自分の本当の姿に気づくことから始まります。古い偽りの自分に気づき、神の目的に適った、新しい真の自分の姿に気づくことです。
キリストは、ご自分のあるべき姿を知っていました。それは、人の期待に応えるのではなく、神の期待に応える生き方です。イエスはカペナウムの「町中の人（33）」の病気を癒したり、悪霊を追い出したり、多忙を極めました。多くの人から「助けてください！」という、切実な期待をかけられていたのです。それは、弟子たちが、まだ朝早いうちからイエスを捜しに来るほどでした。
しかし、イエスがその日で最も優先したことは、「朝早く、まだ暗いうちに起きて寂しいところに出かけていき、そこで祈」ることでした。「朝早く、まだ暗いうち起きて」というのは、一日の生活の中で神様との交わりを「時間的」に優先することです。「寂しいところに出かけて行って」というのは、「わざわざ」静かで独りになれる環境をつくり、神様との交わりを「物理的」、「精神的」に優先することです。これらはすべて、人の期待ではなく、神様の期待に応えるためでした。
私たちも、日々、「やるべきこと」に追われています。それは、家事、育児、仕事、人に仕えることなど、いずれも大切なことです。愛する人を大切に思うがゆえ、人から期待されるがゆえ、どうしても「やるべき」なのです。しかし、私たちは根本的な動機は、人の期待や自分の望みでしょうか。それとも、神の期待（御心）でしょうか。
私たちはどんなに忙くても、毎日、神の心を知ることを優先すべきです。そのためには、毎日、静かなところで独りになる時間を優先する必要があります。そのためには、生活の中で他の何かの優先順位を実際に下げる必要があります。
なぜなら、結局のところ、神を愛することなしに、人を愛することができないからです。それは、神よりもその「やるべきこと」を優先することによって、自分の心を失うことからも分かります。
問いかけ
１．ディボーションを優先し、深めるために、日々の生活を具体的にどのように変えることができますか？
２．神の期待よりも、人からの期待や自分の望みを優先していることはあれば、それは具体的に何ですか？
祈り
神様。人から期待をかけられたときのプレッシャーを、あなたが理解しておられることを感謝します。時々、それは辛く、苦しいものです。人を愛そうとするとき、あなたに忠実に従うことを見失わないように助けてください。主イエスの御名によって祈ります。アーメン。

Silence and Stillness before God (2 minutes)
Mark 1:33-38
33)The whole town gathered at the door, 34) and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. 35) Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36) Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37) and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” 38) Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”
Devotional
Spiritual maturity begins with discovering who you really are. It is the realization of the old, false self, and then God leads us to transform into the new, true self according to His purpose.
Jesus knew what He was. He was living a life that meets God’s expectations, not others’. Jesus’ life seems whirlwind and extremely busy as “the whole town gathered at the door (v. 33),” asking him to heal the sick or cast out demons. Countless came and cried out to him day and night, saying “Help me!” People’s expectation was high. So, the disciples had to look for Jesus even very early in the morning when he was praying in a solitary place.
But, Jesus’ first priority for the day was to get up early in the morning, while it was still dark, and go out to a solitary place and pray. Getting up early in the morning while it is still dark means that Jesus prioritized fellowship with God “temporally” as a day begins. Going out to a lonely place means that Jesus deliberately created a quiet and solitary space to pray and converse with God, which was a “physical” and “spiritual” priority. All of this was to meet God’s expectations, not man’s.
Our life, too, is busy with “things to do” on a daily basis. Actually, we are caught up in such things. Our day is packed with work or housework, parenting or taking care of elderly parents, or serving others in your small group, all of which are important. We are wired to think that we need to handle everything well because we genuinely care about our loved ones. It is also because they expect us. But, we need to realize the fact that we have limits. And, we want to ask ourselves a honest question. Are we driven by others’ expectations or our own desires? Or, is it the expectation (will) of God?
No matter how busy we are, our priority should be discerning God’s will each day. It’s because of the simplest truth, we are imperfect and we have limits. To listen to God’s voice and discern his will, we need to prioritize our quite time with the Lord each day. Putting it another way, we need to actually lower the priority of something else in our lives.
Because, after all, we cannot love others without loving God. We know this truth when we sometimes lose our heart in loving others by prioritizing that “thing to do” over God.

1. What adjustments can be made in your daily life to prioritize fellowship and deepen relationship with God?
2. What exactly, if anything, are you putting other people’s expectations or your own desires ahead of God’s expectations?
Prayer
Father, thank you that you understand the pressure we feel when people put expectations on us. Sometimes it is hard and painful. Help me not to lose sight of following you faithfully when we try to love others. In the name of the Lord. Amen.
